Meet the Cast of THE NOISY NEIGHBORS OR IL CAMPIELLO
by BWW News Desk - January 20, 2017
Different Stages continues its 2016 - 2017 season with Carlo Goldoni's The Noisy Neighbors or Il Campiello. Written for the Venetian Carnival of 1756, Goldoni's comedy recounts the matrimonial scheming, gossip, and games enlivening the daily activity of a bustling but poor Venetian piazza where pandemonium reigns. The commedia-inspired play centers on four scrappy, hard-working, hard-playing families whose daily lives on a small square are interrupted by the arrival of a mysterious wealthy stranger during Carnival.
BWW Review: BLOOMSDAY Reminisces with Audiences in Austin, TX
by Amy Bradley - January 20, 2017
Currently playing at The Austin Playhouse, BLOOMSDAY is story of love oddly intertwined with the James Joyce's novel, Ulysses. Written by the University of Texas Faculty member Steven Dietz, the play's experimental style and arc is reminiscent of Tony Kushner's fabulously entertaining Angels in America. Taking place over the course of 35 years, Robert and Caithleen meet as fleeting youngsters looking for purpose. The purpose of their meeting is that of the title, BLOOMSDAY. For audience members ignorant to the reference, BLOOMSDAY takes place on June 16th as a day of celebration for acclaimed Irish author, James Joyce. It is observed annually in Dublin, where fans and drunkards alike, traditionally dressed in early 1900s garb, march through Dublin following the events and more specifically the scenes of the famous book, Ulysses. The play BLOOMSDAY however, tells the story of young Robbie (played by Aaron Johnson) and Caithleen (played by Claire Grasso) meeting on a tour during the march of Bloomsday. With time itself being the 5th character of the show, Robert (played by Huck Huckaby) scolds his younger self, while Cait (played by Cindy Williams) wrestles with her slipping mind and preparing her younger self for what is to come. The subtle quips and honest reflections from the future selves make for hilarious interactions on stage. Taking place over 35 years, but set within actual two scenes, the arc of the characters and exquisite writing by Steven Dietz, displays a realistic love story forcing introspection.

City Theatre Austin presents CRIMES OF THE HEART
by BWW News Desk - January 17, 2017
Even an imperfect family is family enough. This rings true in Beth Henley's Pulitzer Prize-winning comedy, spinning the zany story of a dysfunctional southern family, told with passion, loads of humor, and a heck of a lot of heart. Each Magrath sister is at a turning point in her life - back together in the scorching heat of Hazlehurst, Mississippi. Lenny, the eldest, never left their childhood home, and is without a romantic prospect in sight. Her sax playing little sister, Babe, faces jail time for shooting her abusive husband. And Meg, the middle sister, has returned home, leaving behind a fading attempt at a singing career and now facing so many memories that she cannot run from.

BWW Review: DEAD MAN'S CELL PHONE at En Route Productions
by Joni Lorraine - January 16, 2017
So DEAD MAN'S CELL PHONE. Let me begin by heaping praise on female playwright Sarah Ruhl for bringing us a quirky and lovable female lead, and a story dominated by female characters. Second, thank goodness for En Route productions and their two female artistic directors, one of whom also directed the show, the other whom also designed the set. Third, credit is due to this theatre company for incorporating their work into the visual arts landscape to give us a double dose of worthy culture in a city where having a sandwich at Micklethwaite Meats is possibly as close as some hipsters will get to art or theatre.

BWW Review: HIR Is A Darkly Funny And Passionately Angry Take On A Family In Crisis
by Frank Benge - January 09, 2017
HIR is a socially-constructed, gender-neutral, politically-correct pronoun unofficially used in place of him/her or his/her. It is also an extremely dark and angry comedy by Obie Award winning artist and playwright Taylor Mac that made the New York Time's Top Ten Best Theater of 2015 list, about a housewife dealing with a daughter who is transgender, a son returning home after three years in Afghanistan, and a formerly abusive husband who has experienced a stroke that has rendered him nearly speechless. Think of it as Jules Feiffer on LSD wearing a stunning pair of Louboutins and you're getting closer to the neighborhood this play resides in. HIR makes Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf and Long Day's Journey into Night seem like quaint fifties family dramas.

BWW Review: LOOSE GRAVEL is Raw, Edgy and Occasionally Brilliant
by Frank Benge - January 06, 2017
LOOSE GRAVEL, a new work by Frank Wo/Men Collective, is a collaborative performance piece by a group of Austin and New York emerging artists that is part dance and part short theatrical scenes that span the gamut from comedic to absurdist and back to dramatic. The work is a gender fluid piece of thirty two individual vignettes that is multi-lingual in places. This highly physical piece takes risks that don't always work, but when they do, there are flashes of brilliance on this tiny stage.
