One-Woman Show Based on Maya Angelou is in Development for Broadway

Maya Angelou is one of the most influential women of the modern age, and Deadline reports that her story may be heading to the Broadway stage. Angelou's son Guy Johnson is working alongside producers David Michael Rich, and J. Todd Harris (Heathers, Doctor Zhivago) to put together a one-woman show based on her life and work.

The project, currently titled Phenomenal Woman: An Evening With Maya Angelou, will draw from her writings and also include personal stories new to audiences. Johnson says the show will "hope to capture her joie de vivre".

Phenomenal Woman is eyeing a 2021 Broadway run.

Maya Angelou has received more than 30 honorary degrees from universities worldwide. She is perhaps best known for her 1969 book "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings", which tells of her life up to the age of seventeen, and brought her international recognition and acclaim.
