La Monnaie's THE TALE OF TSAR SALTAN Receives Casta Diva Prize

La Monnaie's new production of Rimsky-Korsakov's fantasy opera The tale of Tsar Saltan has been rewarded with the Casta Diva prize, the most prestigious opera award in Russia, in the category 'Best European Opera Event'.

The Casta Diva prizes reward Russian's best operas and honor a production with a Russian artistic team abroad, this year granted to The tale of Tsar Saltan. For this imaginative opera Rimsky-Korsakov drew inspiration from one of Alexander Pushkin's celebrated fairy tales, known throughout Russia. For the revival of this masterpiece, la Monnaie appealed to a team that, almost exclusively, grew up with with this fairy tale: The production was directed by Dmitry Tcherniakov, costumes by Elena Zaytseva and magical video projections designed by Gleb Filshtinsky. On stage the production was also carried by Russians, with Svetlana Aksenova in the role of Tsarina Militrisa and Bogdan Volkov singing Tsarevich Gvidon. Volkov has also been rewarded for his interpretation of Tom Rakewell in Stravinsky's The Rake's Progress, crowned best coproduction of the year.

The tale of Tsar Saltan is still available on demand on our website for the duration of la Monnaie's Virtual Season. Within a few weeks we will find out if this production will be able to transform its nomination for 'Best new production into a prize at the International Opera Awards.
