BWW Reviews: LES MISERABLES at Casa MananaBWW Reviews: LES MISERABLES at Casa Manana
by Kyle West - Jun 25, 2015

My first experience with LES MISERABLES was in 1996, as a tween performing in my school's musical review. While most other kids learned the material and moved on, I saved my pennies for the cast recording, memorizing the show word-for-word. After moving to New York in 2004, my work provided me with virtually unlimited tickets to the city's hottest shows. By the time LES MISERABLES returned to Broadway (in 2006, with a carbon-copy revival of the original production that had closed three years previously), I was a jaded New York twenty-something, no longer inspired by the 'tourist trap' hits. Then, as I sat in the darkened Broadhurst Theatre, the turntable moved, and I realized I was watching an unparalleled piece of theatre history. (more...)

WALNUT CREEK, CA (July 7, 2015) – The California Symphony presents the beloved classic 1939 film The Wizard of Oz, and performs the complete, live orchestral accompaniment as the movie is shown on a giant screen at the Concord Pavilion in Concord, Friday, August 21 at 8:30 pm. Conductor Sarah Hicks leads the orchestra in some of the best-loved movie songs and music of all time, including Harold Arlen and E.Y. “Yip” Harburg's “Over the Rainbow,” “We're Off to See the Wizard,” “If I Only Had a Brain,” “Ding-Dong! The Witch is Dead,” “The Merry Old Land of Oz,” and many more, as well as the underscore by composer Herbert Stothart. Judy Garland and the other actors' original vocal performances are preserved and enhanced, so they can be fully heard and enjoyed as the orchestra plays. The film's restored images are accompanied by the orchestra playing entirely new transcriptions of Harold Arlen's brilliant lost scores. The production is by Emmy Award-winning producer John Goberman (Live from Lincoln Center). Tickets for The Wizard of Oz are $25 to $75 for adults and $10 for students 18 years old and younger, and are on sale now at www.californiasymphony.org/oz. (more...)

B.K. Brain Pens DORIS AND THE ANKHB.K. Brain Pens DORIS AND THE ANKH
by BWW News Desk - Jul 31, 2015

When author B.K. Brain set out to write a book for his fourteen-year-old daughter, he looked to the classics for inspiration. Many great stories came to mind but two stood out as truly timeless: The Wizard of Oz and Alice in Wonderland. 'The sense of wonder in those books is undeniable. The worlds are beautiful and the characters stay with you long after the final page. That's what I strove for with Doris and the Ankh, my middle-grade fantasy. Even the name Doris is an amalgamation of Dorothy and Alice, in honor of those iconic adventurers. My daughter devoured the book and now I've released it on Kindle in hopes that other kids will enjoy it as well.' The middle grade fantasy Doris and the Ankh is now available on Amazon.com and at the Kindle store. (more...)
