“The Blues Scale is a Pentatonic Scale with an extra note”, says Johnson. Claude starts off this easy beginner blues guitar lesson by demonstrating the pentatonic scale in the key of A as follows; 5th fret of the 6th string with first finger to the 8th fret with 4th finger to the 5th fret of the 5th string with first finger to the 7th fret with 3rd finger to the 5th fret of the 4th string with first finger to the 7th fret with 3rd finger to the 5th fret of the 3rd string with first finger to the 7th fret with 3rd finger to the 5th fret of the 2nd string with first finger to the 8th fret with 4th finger to the 5th fret of the first string with first finger and to the 8th fret with 4th finger. To make this scale into the blue scale, you simply add the flattened 5th degree of the scale to it. This is done by adding the 6th fret of the 5th string with 2nd finger and 8th fret of the 3rd string with 4th finger. Claude demonstrates this easy blues lick based in the minor pentatonic scale in the key of A as follows; 8th fret of the first string with 3rd finger to the 5th fret with first finger and then repeat that sequence for the second string, then 7th fret of the 3rd string with 3rd finger and do a half step bend and release and then a pull-off to the 5th fret with first finger and then a hammer-on to the 7th fret of the 4th string with 3rd finger, “this is the first part of the lick”, says Johnson. Claude demonstrates the second part of the lick as follows; 7th fret of the 3rd string with 3rd finger to the 5th fret with first finger and repeat this sequence for the 4th string to the 7th fret of the 5th string with 3rd finger and then slide to the 5th fret to a pull-off to the 3rd fret with first finger and finally a hammer-on to the 5th fret of the 6th string with third finger. Claude demonstrates this concept in the key of C, which has no sharps or flats, to make it easier to understand. Claude starts off by demonstrating how to build a major triad by taking the first, third and fifth notes of the major scale and playing them together, which makes a major triad, Johnson continues by explaining that if you simply flatten the third note the triad becomes minor.
