BWW Review: KING JOHN at Praxis Stage
by Andrew Child
- Feb 1, 2020
Why isn't this show an impersonation of cool even if it falls into some trappings of the dreaded 'regional theatre' scene? I think it's because Praxis Stage is, at its heart, genuinely concerned with the prospects of theatre that every other theatre in this city needs to purport to care about in order to get covered by the Boston Globe and nominated for Elliott Norton Awards. Every facet of the performance seems to be manufactured with an average audience member in mind, and the results are refreshingly un-pretentious. Just as with Coriolanus, I advise any theatre artist who works at one of Boston's theatres with cloudy-dishwater mission statements and haphazardly 'diverse' offerings to engage with Praxis Stage. Even when renting the BCA, their ticket prices are less than $20. For a show of this caliber, thought through down to the details, that's cool enough for me.

by Stephi Wild
- Oct 7, 2019
Join us on All Souls' Eve, the one night of the year when the dead can walk among the living. Nineteenth century theatre impresario William Niblo intends to give the permanent residents of Brooklyn's Green-wood Cemetery a show like they've never seen before. You'll meet outlandish figures from history such as Boss Tweed, the notoriously crooked Tammany Hall politician, Rose Howe, a socialite famed for giving her dog a lavish funeral, and Lola Montez, a performer who toured the world with her scandalous spider dance. Green-wood residents Leonard Bernstein and Fred Ebb team up for a duet! But can Niblo carry off his grand spectacle when the truth comes back to haunt him? This romp through history is directed by Andi Lee Carter (he/him/they/them) and features the talents of Shakira Seale (they/them), Elisabeth Zimmerman (she/her), Lisa (she/her/they/them), Darius-Anthony Robinson (he/him) and Gavin Knittle (he/him). Music direction is by Michael G. Meketa (he/him).

BWW Review: PLENTY, Chichester Festival Theatre
by Gary Naylor
- Jun 14, 2019
The one-time highly controversial David Hare play still packs a punch and a message that seems, if anything, even more insistent in these Austerity / Brexit days.
