Zoe Boekbinder Announces Support Dates For Ani DiFranco

New Orleans-based singer-songwriter Zoë Boekbinder returns after a yearlong hiatus with two support dates for acclaimed folk artist Ani DiFranco, before embarking on her own short tour of California in January 2014.

Boekbinder will provide support for Ani DiFranco on January 3rd in Baton Rouge, LA (Varsity Theatre) and January 4th in New Orleans, LA (House of Blues). For her California tour in mid-January, she'll be joined by violinist Dorota Szuta and cellist Danah Olivetree. They'll play a variety of markets, including Berkeley, (Subterranean Art Space), San Francisco (Fortress Callosum) and Santa Cruz (Subrosa Infoshop).

Boekbinder sings with a timeless, lived-in voice timbre that recalls vinyl records and old time speakeasies. Her songs are anchored by finger-picked acoustic guitar, but often she experiments with added instrumentation, either acoustic (string instruments) or electronic (loop pedals, distortion effects). Her last album - Darling Specimens - was widely lauded as a prime example of a folk artist redefining the genre. Songs from that record, as well as many new ones, will make up the setlist for these California shows.

Zoë recently sat in with Amanda Palmer for a town hall discussion about the future of music, hosted by BitTorrent (more information here). She's also near the end of her most recent musical projects- 100 songs in 100 days. Every day, she uploads a new song to Bandcamp for fans, and has since October 8, 2013. In discussing the project, she shares, "When I began my yearlong hiatus, my intention was to focus on songwriting but I found many distractions with all my new spare time. I began the 100 songs project as a self motivation tool and it has become so much more. It has transformed me as a creator."

Zoë Boekbinder has shared the stage with folks like Amanda Palmer, Kaki King, Jeff Lewis and Neil Gaiman. Before launching her solo career, she spent five years recording and performing as Vermillion Lies - a folk/cabaret duo with sister Kim Boekbinder.

Following 2011's electro-folk release Darling Specimens, Boekbinder's next project is a collaboration with inmates at New Folsom Prison in California, where she's volunteered, led workshops and performed concerts for the past four years. Many of these songs will be part of her upcoming tour.
