Veteran British screen actor, Sir John Hurt, has passed away at aged 77. His diverse career included turns on screen on film, television, as well as voice acting.

Hurt is best known for roles in a number of blockbuster films including Alien, the Harry Potter series, and as the title character in the groundbreaking film, The Elephant Man. Hurt is also well-known to television fans from his work as "The War Doctor" on BBC's hit-fantasy series, Doctor Who.

His most recent work can currently be seen in the Oscar-nominated film, Jackie, currently in theaters.

Over the span of his career, the distinguished actor received two Academy Award nominations, a Golden Globe and four BAFTA awards. In 2012, the actor received the special distinction of Outstanding British Contribution to Cinema at the BAFTA's. Hurt received a knighthood for contributions to the film in 2015.

He is survived by Anwen Rees-Myers, his wife of 12 years.
