Yesterday, Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz helped unveil a new mural, painted by artists and student volunteers from Groundswell, in the underpass of the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway on Atlantic Avenue. Scroll down for photos!

The project was led by Brooklyn artists Esteben Del Valle and Marc Evans, who gathered ideas for the mural, which is a fun street scene, by going door-to-door and getting opinions from neighborhood shopkeepers. The mural was spearheaded by the Atlantic Ave BID, which received funding for the mural from a Department of Small Business Services BID Challenge Grant, sponsored by Deputy Mayor Bob Steel, and the Department of Transportation. Borough President Markowitz presented certificates to each of the student volunteers in appreciation of their efforts.

"A 'tip of the brush' to the incredible artists, student volunteers and civic leaders that turned this unassuming underpass into a canvass showcasing the vibrancy of Atlantic Avenue!" said Borough President Markowitz. "This mural is situated at the start of one of the longest thoroughfares in New York City, a pathway for the 'stroller derby' into Brooklyn Bridge Park. It is an amazing addition to a 'colorful' community along the Columbia Waterfront."
