Twerk-goddess Miley Cyrus could be TIME magazine's next "Person of the Year". That is, if the editors follow the public's opinion. The pop star and actress is leading the publication's online poll with 28.5 percent of the vote (as of 9:30 p.m. on November 27).

Cyrus sits at No. 1, above Narendra Modi (11.8 percent), Edward Snowden (9.3 percent), Wendy Davis (5.4 percent), Vladimir Putin (4.2 percent) and Pope Francis (1.3 percent), among others, in the top 12.

Voters are asked to "vote for the person you think most influenced the news this year for better or worse". Voting closes at 11:59 p.m. on December 4, and the combined winner of the reader polls will be announced on December 6, with TIME's official "Person of the Year" revealed on December 11.

Cyrus, who rose to fame as the lead on Disney Channel's "Hannah Montana," has been working hard to reinvent herself, and has become a lightning rod for controversy, from her racy, twerking performance at MTV's Video Music Awards to her recent open letter-based feud with fellow controversial artist Sinead O'Connor, to her recent hosting appearance on "Saturday Night Live".

Her current hits "Can't Stop," and "Wrecking Ball" come from her new album, Bangerz. As of October 2013, Cyrus had nine top-ten hits on the Hot 100.
