Huntington Avenue Theatre History

Designed and constructed as America's first civic playhouse, the building today known as the Huntington Avenue Theatre was the first tax-exempt theatre established in the nation. Construction having begun in 1923, it was formally opened with Sheridan's The Rivals on November 10‚ 1925. The architect was J. Williams Beal and Sons.

Huntington Theatre Company Cancels All Public Performances And Events

Huntington Theatre Company Managing Director Michael Maso announced today after much careful consideration that due to the evolving circumstances surrounding COVID-19, effective immediately, the Huntington Theatre Company will suspend all public performances and events at both the Huntington Avenue Theatre and the Calderwood Pavilion at the BCA until further notice.

As BroadwayWorld previously reported, What the Constitution Means to Me is in the process of being recorded for eventual future release. BroadwayWorld has now learned from a production representative that in addition to being filmed at the end of the show's Broadway run in August, additional footage will be captured next week at a Brooklyn soundstage. No details have been released yet on where and when the recording may be released.i??

Broadway actress Cassie Beck (The Rose Tattoo, The Humans) will star in the next segment of the national tour of Heidi Schreck's Tony Award nominated play and Pulitzer Prize finalist What the Constitution Means to Me, directed by Oliver Butler. Beck will begin performances in Charlotte, NC in June 2020, followed by performances in Boston at Huntington Avenue Theatre, Nashville at TPAC and La Jolla, CA at La Jolla Playhouse.

Awoye Timpo (In Old Age at New York Theatre Workshop, Good Grief at the Vineyard Theatre). The Bluest Eye begins performances at the Huntington Avenue Theatre (264 Huntington Avenue, Boston) Friday, April 24, 2020 and runs through Sunday, May 24, 2020.

This Tony Award-nominated play by two-time Pulitzer Prize winner Lynn Nottage is directed by Kimberly Senior (Disgraced on Broadway). Sweat began performances at the Huntington Avenue Theatre (264 Huntington Avenue, Boston) on Friday, January 31, 2020 and runs through Sunday, February 23, 2020. The official press opening night was Wednesday, February 5, 2020. Tickets are now available.

PEARL ETERNITY Will Play the Huntington Avenue Theatre

Pearl Eternity (PearlTheShow.com), a Broadway style dance-theatre spectacular, inspired by the life of Pearl S. Buck, the first woman to win both the Nobel and the Pulitzer Prizes, will play the Huntington Avenue Theatre (264 Huntington Avenue) on Saturday, January 11 at 8pm. The story, focusing on the substantial influence Pearl had on both Chinese and Western cultures, will be brought to life through choreography by Daniel Ezralow (Ezralow Dance Company, Spiderman: Turn Off The Dark, Cirque du Soleil's LOVE, MOMIX, Sochi Olympics Opening Ceremony, Academy Awards), a new score composed by Jun Miyake (collaborations with Robert Wilson, Pina Bausch, David Byrne and Oliver Stone), story by Zhang Bing, produced by Angela Tang, dazzling visuals, and a company of 20 dancers. The show premiered to great acclaim at Lincoln Center in New York City.
