Shakespeare’s ‘lost play’ Cardenio, re-imagined by Gregory Doran (Artistic Director of the Royal Shakespeare Company), is a thrilling adventure of love, sex, betrayal of friendship and honour set in 17th century Spain.
Cardenio, a young, courtly, handsome Spaniard, has to battle the lusty challenges of a young nobleman, Fernando, to re-capture the woman he loves and a web of deceit, betrayal and counter-betrayal ensues, `a tale of fractured friendship and impetuous desire’ (Professor Valery Wayne). This majestic youthful production is suffused with an epic sense of scale, destiny and romance and explores the idea that `Love for the most part is not love but lust’.
