The curtain was raised on Wednesday night for the opening of the first National Tour of MJ. The cast took their opening night bows at the James M. Nederlander Theatre (24 W. All new photos have been released from LA CAGE AUX FOLLES, now playing at Regent's Park Open Air Theatre. The musical features a book by Harvey Fierstein, with Music & Lyrics by Jerry Herman, based on the play by Jean Poiret.

Just last week, the Broadway and National Tour casts of MJ gathered for a special send off celebration at the Civilian Hotel. What did our critic think of AIN'T MISBEHAVIN' at GREAT LAKES THEATER? The setting in which a musical production takes place, often affects the pleasure one gets from the experience. A perfect case in point is AIN'T MISBEHAVIN' presently being staged by Great Lakes Theater in its intimate Hanna Theatre home.

The final production in First Stage's 2022/23 season is THE GRACIOUS SISTERS, freely adapted from Aeschylus' The Eumenides by noted playwright/ filmmaker and First Stage Resident Playwright Alice Austen, currently running through May 21st. Check out photos from the production here!

As the old joke goes “he has a face for radio”….Well, Bob Merrill, Legends Radio host and interviewer, also has the face, demeanor, and musicianship to be a vocalist/bandleader. He brought the group Sunnnyside Swing to the Persson Hall at The Kravis Center last night for an evening of hits from The Great American Songbook. 

'Two thirds rhythm and one third soul.' That's how Fats Waller defined the uniquely American form of popular music and dance known as 'swing.' Requiring only joyful enthusiasm and a ready partner, swing exploded out of pre-war Harlem's hotbed of youth culture and swept the world.

The Broadway at Birdland concert series was proud to once again present Gunhild Carling, known as Sweden's "Queen of Swing," on the Birdland stage on Monday, July 9. The Swedish musical sensation is an internationally acclaimed superstar whose one-woman show is a can't-miss event! Whether she's singing favorite jazz standards, playing one of many instruments (trumpet, trombone, harmonica, flute, recorder, or jazz bagpipe), Gunhild's sublime showmanship shines through.

In Sisters of Swing, produced by Town Hall Arts Center, the lives of LaVerne, Maxene and Patty, are put on display as they sing their way through the years. The show follows the sisters from their early days on the road and rise in fame to their dissembling over irreconcilable differences. With a score chalk-full of hit songs such as, "Bei Mir Bist Du Schon," "Don't Sit Under the Apple Tree," and "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy," some audiences members may get a sense of nostalgia that will leave them smiling.

The Django Reinhardt NY Festival is in full swing at Birdland, it's New York City home. Jean Django Reinhardt was a Belgian-born, Romani French jazz guitarist and composer, regarded as one of the greatest musicians of the twentieth century.

Michael Feinstein returned to the club that bears his name with his brand new show, Summertime Swing, featuring special guest star Marilyn Maye, last night and BroadwayWorld was there.

The Milton Berle Room heard the sounds of past Friars, Louis Armstrong, Louis Jordan, and Louis Prima last night as Danny Bacher brought his show Swing That Music to the club.  BroadwayWorld was there for the fun.  The club has been home to many of the music world's past legends and Danny Bacher's music added to that storied tradition. Joining Danny for the evenings music and comedy were comedian Marla Schultz and jazz vocalist Alexis Cole along with Danny's 7 piece band.

Broadway triple threat Jeremy Benton adds the role of 'developing director' to his already laudable resume when he stages an upcoming industry reading of the new musical, Sweet Swing!, in New York City next week. Benton directs and choreographs the six-person musical, which has book and music by Diane Tauser (Notre Dame de Paris and Stone Cold Beauty), and tells the real story of a wartime romance during World War Two.

When I was asked to interview a cast member of "MOTOWN THE MUSICAL" currently on tour, I chose Galen J. Williams. I had two reasons. The first is that I had previously seen him performing in a Broadway Dreams Foundation show in Los Angeles and found him to be a captivating performer. The second is that I am intrigued by the demands of a swing. So I called Galen and spoke with him about MOTOWN and swings and Broadway dreaming.
