Syracuse University's Department of Drama presents David Mamet's SPEED-THE-PLOW, beginning tonight, February 21, and running through March 2, 2014 at Arthur Storch Theater.

Focusing on Alan Kahn, author of 'The Speed Bag Bible' and known as the 'Speed Bag King', you will hear his inspirational story and see some of the most talented speedbaggers and punchdrummers in the world explain why the speed bag is so addictive. Men and women alike, of all ages and abilities have found what is called 'Bible-Style' punching to settle the mind, build the body and be an all-around fun activity... an addiction that is good for you. Beginning with the invention of the rubber punching ball (or what is now known as the speed bag or speed ball) in the late 1800's in Troy, NY, the film documents the history of its development over the years. From the days of 'Fancy Punching' Vaudeville acts to today's bible-style punchers it is still one of the best methods for developing hand speed, timing and eye-hand coordination. Alan Kahn explains how he was first introduced to the speed bag and what led to his life's mission of creating a language or notation that anyone could read, understand and use to learn the various techniques and combinations that are known as 'Bible-Style' punching. "Write what you know", they say. One thing the great playwright David Mamet knows is the inside story of Hollywood movies. Bergen County Players continues its "From Page to Stage" season with Mamet's Speed-the-Plow, a no-holds-barred look at the cutthroat world of the Hollywood film industry, over four weekends beginning Saturday, January 11th and concluding Saturday, February 1st. Performed at the Little Firehouse Theatre in Oradell, Friday and Saturday performances are at 8 pm and Sunday performances are at 2 pm. I'm a big fan of the works of playwright David Mamet, and with his play, SPEED THE PLOW, he takes aim at the cutthroat world of Hollywood. It's a fascinating look at what sells and what doesn't when you're talking about the big screen. And, it also shows how friendships can be pushed to the brink by perceived betrayals. Marked by solid performances from the cast, the play is funny and telling in equal measure. The current production by The New Jewish Theatre is nicely constructed and executed, as well as providing ample food for thought.
