Broadway veteran Phyllis Newman has not only graced the stage with performers such as Bernadette Peters and Donna McKechnie, and worked directly with other Broadway greats such as Leonard Bernstein, but she was even nominated for a Tony Award against Barbra Streisand- and won! Despite her extensive career and success, she finds her greatest joy and pride in the work of her husband, the late Tony Award-winning lyricist Adolph Green. In light of his upcoming 100th birthday and the opening of his first masterpiece, ON THE TOWN, Newman graciously shared with us her experiences as a Broadway veteran and wife of a lyricist.

Last Thursday, we officially "froze" the show, which means that we are finished with any major changes. We continue to receive notes before our performances. However, the choreography, set changes, music, and our script will adhere to Thursday night's version--our final draft, so to speak. This way, we get to marinate in the show a bit while previews continue and then the October 16 opening arrives. Also, it gives the press a chance to see it ahead of time.

Adam Green, son of award-winning writer Adolph Green, has partnered with Vanity Fair to offer an account on how Leonard Bernstein, Jerome Robbins, Betty Comden, and his father brought the beloved musical ON THE TOWN to Broadway seven decades ago in a new essay.
In celebration of this season's ON THE TOWN, we've collected 10 of our favorite dance musicals. From classics like ANYTHING GOES, 42ND STREET, A CHORUS LINE and WEST SIDE STORY to modern marvels such as NEWSIES and STRICTLY BALLROOM, the way choreography is used to tell a story continues to evolve and inspire.
I have been so impressed by the tremendous support and camaraderie in the Broadway community. Many from across the theater spectrum already have come to enjoy ON THE TOWN in previews. It's been inspiring to see cast members and creatives from WICKED, IF/THEN, PIPPIN, NEWSIES, AN AMERICAN IN PARIS, LITTLE DANCER, NBC's live telecast of PETER PAN, and so many others in our community excited and eager to show their support. We can always tell when our audiences are speckled with others who work on the 'Great White Way'. From the moment the house lights dim, a friendly buzz radiates onto the stage.
Earlier today, Ellen Hart of Ellen's Stardust Diner (1650 Broadway) hosted a reunion of real former Miss Subways- a position which Ellen herself once held. During that luncheon, ON THE TOWN's Megan Fairchild, who plays Ivy Smith or 'Miss Turnstiles' in the musical, was crowned as a new honorary Miss Subways. Following the luncheon, the former Miss Subways travelled down to the Lyric Theatre on 42nd street for a matinee of ON THE TOWN. BroadwayWorld brings you photos from inside the special event below!
We just finished our first full week of previews!!! After our shows here at ON THE TOWN, there is always a crowd of fans by our stage door anxious to get their programs signed by the cast and eager to share with us their favorite aspects of the show. For most, the top of their list is the dancing.
We had our first preview performance of ON THE TOWN this past Saturday!
ON THE TOWN and TodayTix, the Broadway ticket app, just announced Broadway's first ever mobile lottery, offering $20 day-of tickets to the iconic musical comedy. One of the wonderful things about live theater is that each audience member's experience is different. For me, a favorite aspect of live theater is its ability to suspend disbelief and to transport the audience to the world being presented onstage. When it's done well, immersion into the story-telling and production can make the audience forget, at least for a moment, that they are watching a bunch of actors in a play. The experience envelopes them, and before long the audience is crying and laughing along with the characters on the stage.
This fall, one of America's classic musical comedies is back on Broadway - On The Town, featuringTony Yazbeck, Jay Armstrong Johnson and Clyde Alves. I experienced my first Broadway Sitzprobe this past weekend! The nerdy Asian boy in me needs to explain what a sitzprobe is, for those who don't already know. Sitzprobe (pronounced zits-probe) is a German-derived term literally meaning 'seated test or seated trial.' Of course, the sitzprobe process is widely used across the various performing arts. In the musical theater world, it is when the orchestra members and the actors meet for the first time and do a seated run-through rehearsal of the show. Up until Saturday, we had been listening to our rehearsal pianists and drummer. From what I understand, the score is tremendously difficult to play on the piano, as it was written to be performed by a huge orchestra. So here's a shout-out to our talented rehearsal musicians who have been holding down the fort for us during the past several weeks.
Things are moving along so quickly as the first preview performance of On The Town (September 20) approaches. We have completed teching almost half of our show. One of my favorite songs in the show is 'Lonely Town', performed by Tony Yazbeck (as the sailor Gabey). Tony's voice is hauntingly gorgeous, and the accompanying duet danced by Kristine Covillo and Stephen Hanna is stunning. On The Town is such a comedic show, so it is a refreshing change of pace when we get to the 'Lonely Town' number. I dressed up my dogs, Hugo and Banjo, in sailor outfits and took pictures of them. Enjoy. I imagine them howling out this tune while they are home alone.
