Whether intentionally or not, London’s opera houses have leaned hard into the Halloween season with an unspoken theme of “go bleak or go home”. The trouble, of course, is that FALSTAFF is a comedy. In the new production of the work, which opened at Rome’s Opera House last week, it didn’t help that director Tatjana Gürbaca didn’t seem to have anything particular in mind in her take on it.
