In many of America’s cities, theatre history exists in plain sight. Whether inside a museum or on a street corner, fascinating pieces of theatre lore exist, waiting to be discovered by an interested passerby. Here are ten inspiring displays of theatre history I saw up close and in person this summer, from New York City to Washington D.C. and beyond. You can visit them too—and many are free to see!

It's an age-old showbiz adage—never work with children or animals. But here that advice is thrown out as the luminaries of the show are a plucky pixie adorned with bright red hair accompanied by a lovable shaggy labradoodle. Hey, in a season of uncertainty, a little schmaltz is appreciated.

The apocalypse just wouldn’t be any fun without the rapier wit ruminations of actor/comic/performance artists David Mills, here in San Francisco for two shows as part of his ‘four-show national tour.’ After decades in London, Mills is back in NYC and his acclimation isn’t as joyous as you’d think. With his silver-tongued signature and very droll manner, he launches into a nightmarish description of a stroll uptown replete with rats, feces, homeless drug addicts and children selling Chicklets. The harangue is intermixed with “Native New Yorker,” a 1977 soul dance hit.

This reviewer was overwhelmed at such amazing talent on one stage.

The Stonewall Chorale announced its 48th season, featuring a mix of classical and contemporary works. The season begins December 7 with C'EST MAGNIFIQUE!, highlighting choral masterpieces.

Left on Tenth has announced the full creative team for the new Broadway play.  The production is set to begin performances at The James Earl Jones Theatre on September 26, with its official opening on October 23.

Million Dollar Quartet, the show inspired by a legendary Sun Records jam session in 1956, was an unlikely hit when it made its Broadway debut in 2010. Although it was based on an actual event, the musical takes liberties with what actually went on during that memorable day in order to create a more appealing show. If you take that into account, you can ignore the show’s numerous exaggerations, anachronisms, and falsehoods, because it is simply enormously entertaining. The show opens this Friday for a two-weekend run at the Fred Kavli Theatre in Thousand Oaks.
