The Royal Shakespeare Company returns to the Barbican this autumn with a contemporary London Season comprising three of the playwright’s most loved titles: Macbeth, Romeo & Juliet and The Merry Wives of Windsor.

RSC Deputy Artistic Director Erica Whyman follows her incredible 2016 production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream: A Play for the Nation with the violent and devastating tragedy Romeo and Juliet. As in 2016, this production will see young people from RSC Associate Schools perform alongside the professional actors in the cast.

What if your first true love was someone you’d been told to hate?

Set in a world very like our own, this Romeo and Juliet is about a generation of young people born into violence and ripped apart by the bitter divisions of their parents. The most famous story of love at first sight explodes with intense passion and an irresistible desire for change, but leads all too quickly to heart-breaking consequences.

RSC Deputy Artistic Director Erica Whyman returns to the Barbican following her acclaimed production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream: A Play for the Nation (2016) with Bally Gill and Karen Fishwick as the star crossed lovers in this violent and devastating tragedy.

Romeo and Juliet: 2 NOVEMBER 2018 - 19 JANUARY 2019

The Capulets are an affluent, racially-blended, Afro-Latino family, while the Montagues are a middle-class, white family. Featuring both English and Spanish languages; original music, movement, and dance; and the poetry of Shakespeare; Romeo & Juliet: A Theatre LILA Invention will be presented as a world premiere at Overture Center for the Arts, March 14 - 17, 2019. BWW Review: Don't Miss MISS SAIGON at Kennedy Center
by Jack L. B. Gohn - Dec 17, 2018

There are few entertainments as popular as Miss Saigon (36 million attendees worldwide since it premiered on London's West End in 1989), and few that have occasioned as much controversy. Despite all that popularity, this reviewer had happened never to see the show until the current national tour surfaced this last week at Washington's Kennedy Center. Miss Saigon's reputation for controversy had preceded it, however, and I was on the lookout for offensiveness. But what I saw was a well-honed crowd pleaser with spectacular stagecraft and spectacle, excellent singing, a few catchy tunes, and a compelling plot. Some of the provocations complained of in earlier productions are no longer in evidence. In other instances, I would dispute that the material was ever objectively offensive. I'll discuss all this below, but first, some basics. (more...)
