21-Year Old Female Marathon Swimmer Completes English Channel Open-Water Swim

Swimming from Dover, England to a beach on the coast of France, is considered one of the most difficult swimming feats possible. Abigail Bergman had the dream of accomplishing this extreme challenge from the age of 11, and on TuesDay, August 1st, shebegan at approximately 1 a.m. leaping off the boat and swimming to Shakespeare Beach on the coast of Dover to begin the marathon swim. 13 hours and 15 minutes later, Bergman, tired but determined, arrived and stood up on the beach, near Wissant, Pas de Calais, France. It is a double feature - 5k run and boot camp workout - for those so inclined, and simply a concert for the curious observer and those who choose to recline. This October, Music Director Antonio Pappano makes his Carnegie Hall debut conducting the Orchestra dell'Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in two concerts at Carnegie Hall's Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage. On FriDay, October 20 at 8:00 p.m., the Orchestra performs Prokofiev's Piano Concerto No. 3 in C Major, Op. 26 with Martha Argerich who returns to Carnegie Hall for the first time in nine years as well as the Sinfonia from Verdi's AiDa and Resphigi's Fountains of Rome and Pines of Rome.
