Set firmly in, and often about, New York, Company follows five married, once married, or soon to be married couples and their mutual friend, Robert, a 35-year old bachelor who has been unable to connect in a long-term relationship. Bobby observes the less than ideal aspects of commitment. But, eventually, learns that while relationships aren't perfect, they are a necessary part of "Being Alive." Includes the songs "Getting Married Today," "The Ladies Who Lunch," and "Being Alive."



Opening on Broadway in 1970 and running 705 performances, garnering 14 Tony Award Nominations, and winning 6 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Book, Best Score, Best Lyrics. Revived on Broadway in 1995 running for 60 performances garnering 2 Tony Nominations. Young, 77, the founder of Houston's Theatre Under The Stars, Seattle's 5th Avenue Musical Theatre Company, and the New York-based National Alliance for Musical Theatre, died Wednesday in Palm Springs, California. Young directed the activities of TUTS from its inception in 1968 until his retirement in 2006. For two years in a row he was named by the national Theatre Week magazine as one of the 100 most powerful people in American theatre. (more...)

City Staff have reported an unusual sight around the halls of the Lewis Family Playhouse. Normal-seeming women have been seen squelching unsuspecting children, who then seem to disappear forever. In some instances, instead of being squelched, children have been rumored to be transformed into other creatures, including mice! Staff urges all patrons to the Playhouse and the Library to be vigilant and to purchase tickets to MainStreet Theatre Company's production of Roald Dahl's The Witches, opening October 14th and running through October 29th. Black Girl Magic Show! is an absurdist dance theatre lecture by playwright/performer nicHi douglas on Black female identity. Utilizing African Diasporan histories, Black feminist theory, and a lot of stuff douglas made up, she attempts to unpack, re-pack, and de-pack the Black female experience in America as witnessed by one Black woman - The Professor. As the audience follows The Professor, they discover what might happen if the one Black girl without 'Black Girl Magic' takes matters into her own hands. Before the show ends, the audience experiences a TED-type talk, modern dance, a magic routine, and a concert, often simultaneously. And they probably see at least 20 wigs. (more...)

Dance for Life Raises $233,000 at Annual Gala

Chicago Dancers United (CDU), which mobilizes Chicago's dance community by raising funds through dance, welcomed nearly 2,300 guests at the 26th annual Dance for Life Chicago performance August 19 at the Auditorium Theatre of Roosevelt University, 50 E. Congress Pkwy. Approximately 600 guests attended a pre-performance gala reception at the Hilton Chicago, 720 S. Michigan Avenue. From a combination of ticket sales, sponsorships and contributions, Dance for Life Chicago raised more than $233,000 to support Chicago Dancers United's The Dancers' Fund, which provides assistance to members of the dance community coping with critical health and life issues, and the AIDS Foundation of Chicago.
