Florida Studio Theatre (FST) presents its annual fundraiser, the Dangerous Ladies Shindig, on Monday, February 24 in FST's Hegner Theatre Wing. In support of FST's Suffragist Project, a city-wide artistic celebration of the 100th anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment, attendees are invited to don their finest 1920-inspired garb, best cocktail attire, or dress as their favorite 'Dangerous Lady.' Marie G. Kropp, a long-time FST supporter who has been integral to numerous FST events, including last year's western-themed fundraiser, will chair this event. The Gulf Coast Community Foundation is the lead supporter of FST's Dangerous Ladies Shindig.

Virginia Stage Company has been approved for a $20,000 Art Works grant to support a world premiere theater production by Ronve O'Daniel and Jevaris Myrick, co-creators of contemporary hip-hop musical Once Upon A Rhyme: A Musical Tale.  Mr. O'Daniel and Mr. Myrick will write a hip-hop musical that will serve as both education and a celebration of the unique history of the Hampton Roads community.  This theater production is created through the Public Works Virginia (PWVA) program, which leverages the artistic process for individual and community transformation. Overall, the National Endowment for the Arts has approved 1,187 grants totaling $27.3 million in the first round of fiscal year 2020 funding to support arts projects in every state in the nation, as well as the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico.

The four years since dropping his debut album has been a bit of a rocket ride for award-winning R&B-jazz guitarist Adam Hawley. Six of his seven singles have gone to No. 1 nationally and he deftly avoided the sophomore slump when his second outing further established the artist as a centerstage solo artist. The stage is now being set for the February 28th arrival of “Escape,” his third album and first for his new record label, MBF Entertainment. Hawley produced and wrote eight of the record's ten tunes featuring collaborations with a constellation of smooth/contemporary jazz luminaries including Rick Braun, Najee, Michael Lington, Jeff Ryan, Marcus Anderson and Greg Manning.

Creative Cauldron will present its first production of 2020, Crowns, February 13 - March 8, written by Regina Taylor and adapted from the book by Michael Cunningham and Craig Mayberry. When a Brooklyn teen goes to live in South Carolina after the death of her brother she learns the beauty, ceremony and symbolism of hat-wearing from her resilient, southern sisters. This musical draws from the roots of gospel music and traditions of greater African-American Diaspora to weave an inter-generational story of love, joy, and redemption. Crowns has played throughout the country to acclaim, including a sold out run at Arena Stage. Directed by Kara Tameika Watkins and Ian Anthony Coleman, with musical direction by Cedric Lyles. Crowns will be presented at Creative Cauldron, 410 S Maple Ave, Falls Church VA 22046 from February 13 to March 8. Performances are Thursdays at 7:30 PM, Fridays at 7:30 PM, Saturdays at 7:30 PM, and Sundays at 2:00 PM & 7:00 PM. Press night is Saturday, February 15th, 2020 at 7:30 PM. For all her sexy coolness though, her performance was right out front, bold, daring, and original... Coasting somewhere between the jazz of today and the pop world of the 60s, her amalgamation in sounds was perfect for the 2020s. In fact, her stylings ran such the amazing gamut from jazz, to swing, to pop, and even to the Broadway, BUT, because those stylings were so rooted in the vocalizations to be found in the works of great jazz artistes of days gone by, we have to say this lady is one of a NEW generation of great jazz singers.
