Established as the Nico Malan Theatre in 1971, the Artscape building is celebrating its 50th Anniversary in existence. As part of celebrations we currently have on display a costume exhibition portraying the unforgettable moments (from Nico to Artscape) for various productions dating back from 1971 to the present day.

The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts today announced plans for its 50th Anniversary season, slated to begin in September 2021 with a grand reopening of its stages and campus and culminate in September 2022 with a fresh interpretation of the seminal work that opened the Center in 1971, Leonard Bernstein’s MASS.

Everybody's got the right... to be vaccinated. On last night's reunion of the original company of Assassins, beloved Broadway composer Stephen Sondheim, who turns 91 later this month, revealed that he is fully vaccinated against COVID-19. 

Stages Theatre Company has announced they will re-open with the hit musical YOU'RE A GOOD MAN CHARLIE BROWN. Returning to the Guggenheim Museum for the first time since 1971, the company revealed an incredible lineup of dancers who were eager to prove their mettle in ballets by George Balanchine and Arthur Mitchell.

Trustus Theatre opens their 35th Anniversary Season with the 1971 Tony Award-Winning musical, Company. Originally set in the '70s, this production has been reimagined to a modern landscape where swiping right, liking, and sharing are all part of starting a relationship and will leave us pondering how true human connections begin these days. Company will open up on The Thigpen Main Stage on Friday September 27, and will run through Saturday, October 26, 2019. Shows will run Thursday through Sunday for five packed weekends. The Broadway community mourns the loss of prolific producer, director, writer, and the individual recipient of the most Tony Awards in multiple categories in history, Harold Prince, who passed away on July 31, 2019 at age 91. To commemorate his life and work, the Committee of Theatre Owners will dim the lights of Broadway theatres in New York for one minute on Wednesday, July 31 at exactly 7:45pm.

According to Variety, veteran of stage and screen Denise Nickerson, best known for starring as Violet Beauregarde in the 1971 film Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, passed away yesterday, July 10. Nickerson suffered a stroke in 2018. She was 62 years old.

Based on the Book 'Charlie and The Chocolate Factory' by Roald Dahl, the scrumptious musical follows the adventures of Charlie Bucket and the other Golden Ticket holders through Willy Wonka's whimsical and mysterious Chocolate Factory filled with Oompa-Loompa, fun, candy and magic around every corner. Featuring the enchanting songs from the 1971 film, and new songs by Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newley, the sweet musical adaption of Roald Dahl's timeless story comes to life on our mainstage June 28 through August 4.

As part of the ongoing celebration of their 50th anniversary, on September 6 the ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND Recording Company--caretakers of the original band's unreleased catalog--in conjunction with distributor The Orchardwill release a four-CD set titled Fillmore West '71, culled from an epic weekend of live music recorded at the legendary San Francisco venue. The Grammy-winning, Rock & Roll Hall of Fame band (formed in March 1969) were in great form on this weekend, where they were the middle act playing between headliners Hot Tuna and the 24-piece opener Trinidad Tripoli Street Band.

GREASE at Pioneer Theatre Company is a nostalgic, feel-good snapshot of the 1950s.

In association with its new exhibition Fearless Fashion: Rudi Gernreich, the Skirball Cultural Center presents excerpts of choreographer Bella Lewitzky's seminal 1971 work Inscape. Wearing iconic costumes originally designed by fashion pioneer Rudi Gernreich and now newly reconstructed by Diana MacNeil, dancers from Luminario Ballet worked with John Pennington of Pennington Dance Group to recreate elements of this masterwork. As described by the New York Times in 1979, [Inscape] still has the fascination of Rudi Gernreich's decor and stretch fabric costumes, which are totally integrated into the design and intent of Miss Lewitzky's choreography.

Sean Keenan (Wake in Fright) and Esther Hannaford (Beautiful: The Carole King Musical) star alongside Gabriel Fancourt (The Hypochondriac), Glenn Hazeldine (Away), Bessie Holland (Wentworth), Robert Menzies (Macbeth), Rahel Romahn (The Principal), Katherine Tonkin (Abigail's Party) and George Zhao (The Family Law) in Melbourne Theatre Company and Sydney Theatre Company's co-production of the joyous Australian classic, Cosi, by Louis Nowra.

The York Theatre Company welcomed specials guests Richard Maltby, Jr., Edward Hibbert, Bill Condon, original cast member and choreographer Dan Siretta, and member from the London John Barry Foundation to a recent performance of the 25th Anniversary Musicals in Mufti presentation of  the NY premiere of Lolita, My Love, with music by John Barry and book and lyrics by Alan Jay Lerner, as edited by Erik Haagensen.  Directed by Emily Maltby and with music direction by Deniz Cordell, the 13-member cast features George Abud (The Band's Visit)as Clare Quilty, Caitlin Cohn (The Secret Garden) as Dolores "Lolita" Haze, Robert Sella (Chitty Chitty Bang Bang) as Humbert Humbert, Thursday Farrar (Aida) as Dr. June Ray, and Jessica Tyler Wright (Sweeney Todd) as Charlotte Haze, with Becca Fox (Singin' in the Rain), Hanako Greensmith (Spring Awakening), Victoria Huston-Elem (Finding Neverland), Jay Aubrey Jones (Assassins), Kennedy Kanagawa (Into the Woods), Max Meyers (Buddy: The Buddy Holly Story), Mark Montague (A Very Brady Musical), and Analise Scarpaci (Matilda, The Musical).

"Man of La Mancha," the first fully-staged musical in the 34-year history of the Hampton Theatre Company, will be the third play of the HTC's 2018-2019 season, opening on March 21 at the Quogue Community Hall and running through April 7.
