Fresh from its three-week stop at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood, the first national tour of PRETTY WOMAN - THE MUSICAL---based on that hit 1990 movie about a Hollywood hooker who finds true love---has made the short drive to OC's Segerstrom Center for the Arts in Costa Mesa for a two-week engagement ending July 17, 2022.

The Raymond F. Kravis Center for the Performing Arts celebrates thirty years of the best of Broadway in South Florida with its Kravis On Broadway series, bringing a phenomenal line-up of seven Broadway shows, including multiple Tony Award winners, and the Kravis Center premieres of the beloved smash hits, Disney’s ALADDIN and WICKED.

Opening tonight at Darkhorse Theater in Nashville is That Woman – The Monologue Show, which explores the stories of women who involved or rumored-to-be involved with President John F. Kennedy. Co-written by Nashville-area women playwrights and actors, it is performed by a diverse ensemble of actors who bring the women to life “in a fascinating look at a lesser-known aspect of history and a thought-provoking and entertaining evening of theatre.”

What did our critic think of Tootsie in Costa Mesa? Despite a still problematic central premise, the non-equity national tour of the stage adaptation of TOOTSIE---now playing at Segerstrom Center for the Arts in Costa Mesa through June 12, 2022---is, for the most part, a funny but flawed musical sprinkled with lots of funny lines, rapid-fire humor, and amusing shenanigans.

PRETTY WOMAN: THE MUSICAL has extended booking at the Savoy Theatre until 28 January 2023. Aimie Atkinson and Danny Mac will extend their runs as Vivian Ward and Edward Lewis respectively.

I had the opportunity to see PRETTY WOMAN: THE MUSICAL, during its visit to The Bushnell in Hartford. Based on one of Hollywood’s most beloved 1990’s movies that launched America’s sweetheart, Julia Roberts, into stardom. Fans of the movie will be happy to see that the story hasn’t dramatically changed and includes all the fun, quotable lines (like, “Big Mistake. Huge!”) and unforgettable moments, like the spicy piano scene.

Fans of the performing arts can choose from seven “Broadway at Overture” titles―including four Madison premieres―and more than 30 other national and international shows, including three Cabaret performances, four National Geographic Live shows and a new musical experience, “Up Close.”

The Cinderella story of sorts follows prostitute Vivian Ward who wealthy businessman Edward Lewis hires to be his escort to business functions for a week. The cast is led by relative newcomer Olivia Valli as Vivian. This show is her first leading role having been an ensemble player in various companies over the last few years. I cannot overstate how perfect Valli is in the role. Vocally she's stunning, but what makes this combination of performer and role such a match made in heaven is the fact that Valli brings an unmatched level of charm, wit, spunk, and grit to the role.

Kimmel Cultural Campus has announced the much-anticipated return of in-person performing arts across their venues: the Kimmel Center, the Academy of Music, and the Merriam Theater. On September 18, from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m., Kimmel Cultural Campus will host a grand reopening event in Commonwealth Plaza to celebrate the start of the 2021-22 season.
