The only thing I can say about this evening is how special it was, and those don't seem like words enough to describe it. It had to be witnessed…and that's the magic of it. It happened once. (well twice.) And then it was gone forever.

Shirley Jackson’s 1959 gothic novel skyrocketed back to recognition in 2018 when it inspired Mike Flanagan’s Netflix sensation of the same name. It’s time for theatre to get its share now, with Stef Smith (of Nora: A Doll’s House fame) adapting Jackson’s original material into a ghostly examination of resentment. Paranormal investigator Dr. John Montague has invited a handful of guests to help him find scientific evidence of the existence of the supernatural at Hill House. As the group begins to experience a series of unexplained events, it becomes apparent that there’s more to the mystery of Hill House, and our characters need to look inward. Directed by Martin Constantine, it’s a decent choice for this spooky season.

In The Karate Kid The Musical, Gino Ochello takes on the title role of David LaRusso, who approaches the role with the wide-eyed determination and gumption expected from a kid like LaRusso, a fish out of water trying to find his way. Ochello is likely pulling from lived experience considering he is also making his debut stage performance with The Karate Kid The Musical - his inherent rawness reflects well in the character.

Dröse & Norberg have previously staged family musicals based on well-known stories such as *Snow White*, *Aladdin*, and *The Jungle Book*, featuring original music; however, with *Viking*, they are targeting a more mature audience. The recommendation that the show is suitable for ages 13 and up is entirely appropriate, as the performance is at times quite violent.

It's been a long wait since London last saw Jonathan Larson's semi-autobiographical rock masterpiece that won four Tony Awards and a posthumous Pulitzer. It's unlikely that any of the cast of the 30th anniversary revival of RENT was out of nappies when the show debuted off-Broadway, but the themes of young people struggling with the cost of living, navigating jobs and relationships, as well as living in the aftermath of the pandemic (albeit this one is AIDS), are evergreen.
