Washington Ensemble Theatre Announces 15th Anniversary Season
by BWW News Desk - April 23, 2018
Washington Ensemble Theatre has announced its 2018/19 Season, a dynamic lineup of three plays that celebrates its 15th anniversary as a producing theatre company in Seattle. The season, which is themed 'More, More, More!' in honor of the company's continued growth and consistent artistic boundary-pushing, includes the fantastical dark comedy Everything You Touch by Sheila Callaghan, political thriller B by Chilean playwright Guillermo Calderon, and the twisted horror-comedy Feathers and Teeth by Charise Castro Smith. In addition to these three mainstage productions, WET is pleased to announce a new addition to its programming, GUSH, a series that will bring a piece of contemporary theatrical work from outside Seattle to be performed on its stage each season. The first piece to be presented as part of GUSH is SINGLET, Erin Markey's tenacious look at earned intimacy and how rivalry, affection, and power intersect. WET will continue to produce as a resident company at 12th Avenue Arts. Subscriptions start at $60 and are on sale now at www.washingtonensemble.org.

Book-It Repertory Theatre has once again brought to life another gripping tale, this time with Junot Diaz's, "The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao", as adapted and directed by Elise Thoron. And as gripping as the tale is what makes it even more riveting are the powerhouse performances from the over 20 characters inhabiting the stage at the Center House Theatre throughout the evening creating the beautiful, funny, dangerous and heartbreaking world. Oh, and did I mention all of the over 20 characters are being played by one lone, amazing actor, Elvis Nolasco?

by BWW News Desk - April 17, 2018
Village Theatre is closing out their season with an all-new stage production of the Broadway hit musical, Hairspray. Tracy Turnblad is a big girl with big hair and an even bigger dream: to dance her way onto national TV, dethrone the reigning teen queen, win the affections of the local heartthrob, and integrate a TV network… all without denting her 'do! The Tony and Drama Desk Award-winning Best Musical teach us to look past skin color and size in the fight for equal rights. "What excites me about this show," says co-director Timothy McCuen Piggee, "is that we get to tell stories that humanize in a world that constantly works to dehumanize. This play is really clever because it offers the opportunity to examine issues like racism, sizeism, homophobia, and bias. This show is thoughtful and courageous and I'm excited to bring it to life with such a strong team of individuals."

SESAME STREET Meets THE EXORCIST In Dark Comedy HAND TO GOD
by BWW News Desk - April 16, 2018
After the death of his father, meek Jason finds an outlet for his anxiety at the Christian Puppet Ministry, in the devoutly religious, relatively quiet small town of Cypress, Texas. Jason's complicated relationships with the town pastor, the school bully, the girl next door, and-most especially-his mother are thrown into upheaval when Jason's puppet, Tyrone, takes on a shocking and dangerously irreverent personality all its own. A devilishly dark, hysterical romp to hell and back, HAND TO GOD explores the startlingly fragile nature of faith, morality, and the ties that bind us.
BWW Review: MAP's Dark Absurd Comedy YEAR OF THE ROOSTER
by Jay Irwin - April 15, 2018
On the surface Olivia Dufault's "Year of the Rooster" doesn't seem like a fun night out filled with laughs. A play about a failed trainer for cock fights. And to be honest it packs an ending that will not send you whistling into the street filled with hope for tomorrow. But this is MAP Theatre, and as their mission statement says, "We favor local work and comedy that hurts a bit" and this one does hurt. But at the same time, it's filled with stunning performances and more than a few laughs in this absurd yet all too grounded world director Peggy Gannon and the cast and crew have created over at 18th and Union.
BWW Review: 5th Avenue's KISS ME, KATE is a Love Letter to Those Who Came Before
by Jay Irwin - April 14, 2018
When you think the classic era of Broadway Musicals, many lean toward Rodgers and Hammerstein or Lerner and Loewe but for my money I always go right to Cole Porter. Maybe not as prolific when it comes to hit shows as the others but you can't dismiss the undeniable genius of "Anything Goes" and of course "Kiss Me, Kate" (my personal favorite), currently playing at the 5th Avenue Theatre. And the folks at the 5th have not only done right by this classic tuner by packing it to the brim with the best singers, dancers and comedians they could find but the production is a love letter to the predecessors of the production, most notably the visual style which is so reminiscent of the 1953 film version, making this far more than a killer show, but an homage.

UW Drama Presents THE SOUND & THE FURY, Panel On Sound Design
by BWW News Desk - April 10, 2018
The actors' voices are not all you hear in a theatrical production. In most cases there is an array of other sounds too-recorded or live music that is incidental or central to the action, special effects ranging from the subtle to the monumental. The artist responsible for all this is the sound designer, and the Northwest is home to some superlative ones. In this third State of the Theatre forum, four sound designers will discuss the nature and practice of their work, and play audio and video samples of what they do best.

This adaptation by Laura Eason was given a highly praised production by the Hartford Theatre Company.
BWW Review: Gospel, Storytelling, and Fabulous Hats with Taproot Theatre's Musical CROWNS
by Amelia Reynolds - April 08, 2018
“Crowns” is a feel-good musical about hats. But it's also so much more than hats, in the way “The Vagina Monologues” is about more than just the female anatomy. Now performing at the Taproot Theatre, “Crowns” delights in this colorful production about history, experience, and culture.

Graffiti Art By RETNA Pops In Seattle Opera's AIDA
by BWW News Desk - April 06, 2018
This May, two different artistic genres-street art and opera-are coming together for Seattle Opera's Aida. Acclaimed stage director Francesca Zambello was looking to create something unique when she asked the graffiti artist RETNA (born Marquis Duriel Lewis) to collaborate with her on a new production of Verdi's masterpiece. RETNA created the bold visual backdrops for Aida with his same distinct style, a type of graphic lettering and illuminated script that has earned him commissions from Usher and Justin Bieber.

BWW Review: High-Energy Performances and Low-Hanging Fruit with Theater Schmeater's Farcical THE COUNTRY WIFE
by Amelia Reynolds - April 05, 2018
Theater Schmeater's 'The Country Wife' satirizes an appalling production from 1675 by the same name. Adapted by Rachel Adkins, this restored Restoration comedy keeps the story from the original roughly the same, but with some modern components and adaptations to gussy up the satire. 'The Country Wife' is an innuendo-rich satire of a satire with a faint hint of social critique. It's another modernized production of an old-fashioned show that has some good comedy, but needs a little more time to edit and sharpen directorial choices.
