BWW Review: Deliciously Naughty THE BEDROOM PLAYS
by Andria Tieman - July 11, 2016
The first offering in Epic Theatre Company's Summer of Sex is a hilarious, unexpectedly touching and no holds barred original production called THE BEDROOM PLAYS.  This series of ten short works gets increasingly racy with each offering, and the members of the audience have the option to tag themselves out in between each, if they feel like they can't handle the next one.  Those that make it all the way through proudly get to share the social media hashtag #10for10.  While some plays in this collection are stronger than others, as a whole it deserves praise for taking chances, equal opportunity nudity and an incredibly brave and talented cast who make every joke shine.

BWW Review: HAROLD AND MAUDE at 2ND STORY THEATRE - Flower Power Lives!
by Larry O'Brien - July 05, 2016
In keeping with Artistic Director Ed Shea's avowed goal of staging less cynical plays, 2nd Story Theatre in Warren is offering the stage version of the 1971 cult film classic HAROLD AND MAUDE by Colin Higgins, who wrote both the screenplay and this stage version, If you have never seen the film version, which starred Ruth Gordon and Bud Cort, you should get yourself over to Warren; if you have seen the film, you might want to go by a ticket to see what director Kevin Broccoli hath wrought. This production features some fine performances, a couple of almost magical special effects, and a story that is so dated it's current again. As Maude, charmingly played by Isabel O'Donnell, explains to Evan Kinnane's Harold in the second act, 'A cliche today is a profound truth tomorrow, and vice versa.' Somebody say, 'Amen.'

BWW Review: Classic, Fantastic WEST SIDE STORY
by Andria Tieman - June 28, 2016
WEST SIDE STORY, the classic retelling of Romeo and Juliet set in New York City places our star-crossed lovers on either side of a turf war between rival gangs.  It's a play so iconic and so familiar that even if one hasn't actually seen it, he or she has likely heard the songs and knows the names of Sharks and Jets.  Even if you've seen it 100 times, it's very worth stopping by Theatre by The Sea for another viewing.  Sometimes a show is practically perfect and doesn't need much tinkering, but skilled direction, choreography and costumes can still elevate a classic to new heights.

BWW Reviews: TUESDAYS WITH MORRIE at 2ND STORY THEATRE - One from the Heart
by Larry O'Brien - June 17, 2016
Either late last winter or early spring, 2nd Story theatre's Artistic Director, Ed Shea, announced that he was looking for less cynicism and revamped the schedule. Out went SPEED THE PLOW and in came CATHOLIC SCHOOL GIRLS. In Jeffrey Hatcher and Mitch Albom's adaptation of TUESDAYS WITH MORRIE (based Albom's book), Shea has struck the mother lode of positivity. In this play (and in the book, and in life) Mitch (Jeff Del Sisto) a young, career-driven journalist learns of his former professor Morrie's (Jay Burke) battle with Lou Gehrig's disease and a one-time visit becomes a weekly pilgrimage and a graduate seminar on the meaning of life and death. The book has sold over fourteen million copies and been translated into fourteen languages. Cynical it is not. The question is, how does into translate onto the stage?

BWW Review: Fabulous Voices Can't Save Dull, Unoriginal IF/THEN at PPAC
by Robert Barossi - June 16, 2016
It's always a challenge to find a fresh, new, innovate way to tell a story. It seems at times like every story out there has already been told so the only option is to tell it again, but tell it differently. Use a storytelling technique that excites and engages the audience, and maybe it won't even matter what the story is. That idea, while it might sound good, just doesn't work in reality, as demonstrated by the current touring production of If/Then, now playing at Providence Performing Arts Center. The interesting way of telling the story just can't mask the fact that the story being told is incredibly ordinary, unoriginal and dull.
