Regional Reviews
All Regional Reviews ›I caught up with Heartbeat Opera’s reinvention of Samuel Barber’s 1958 opera, VANESSA, to Giancarlo Menotti’s libretto, a few days after its debut at the Baruch Performing Arts Center in New York, after premiering last summer at the Williamstown (MA) Theatre Festival.
Jukebox musicals are practically a summer tradition at the Ogunquit Playhouse. In recent years, we’ve seen everything from Jersey Boys and Million Dollar Quartet to The Cher Show, On Your Feet!-The Story of Emilio and Gloria Estefan, Heartbreak Hotel, Beautiful: The Carole King Musical, and last year’s world premiere of When Elvis Met the Beatles.
Brava to Alexandra Silber for capturing all the heart and humor of Lerner’s original book with her thoughtful new adaptation and brava to Katie Spelman for dreaming up a Brigadoon that is as ebullient and spirited as it is deeply human.
The May 8 event offered tasty drinks in Brooklyn's historic cemetery with a sample of the Met Opera's new piece about the famed artists and lovers, El Último Sueño de Frida y Diego.
FALLING OUT opened May 16 at Chelsea Table + Stage, blending immersive staging with a rock-driven score as a cast of actor-musicians pulled the audience directly into a story of heartbreak, creativity, and blurred ownership
HADESTOWN will always have a special place in the heart of Ohio Theatre patrons. On Nov. 16, 2021, the musical was the first production in the historic theatre after the COVID epidemic dimmed the lights there for nearly a year and a half. The theatre staff laid roses on every seat to signal Broadway had returned to its stage.
TimeLine Theatre Company is inaugurating its new theater in Uptown in an impressively dynamic production of when truth and power collide and personal convictions are put to the test.
There is something deeply contrarian about stepping out on a very very hot summer day to watch a very very serious play - I am beginning to think summers belong to humor. Winters can allow some pondering and occasional deep-dives into the horrors of the past. Despite looking for joy, I wound up catching an early evening production of Death and the Maiden at Mumbai’s NCPA, directed by NCPA head Bruce Guthrie, starring Ira Dubey, Neil Bhoopalam and Vivek Gomber.
A cabaret night celebrating the music of Bob Merrill in conjunction with J2 Spotlight Musical Theater Co.'s production of CARNIVAL. THE MYSTERY OF EDWIN DROOD is currently playing through May 24.
A searing MEASURE FOR MEASURE. Burbage Theatre Co. offers a gripping production of Shakespeare's 'problem play'
20-year-old Sophie Sheridan grew up not knowing who her father was. Determined to find out, she snoops through her mother’s diary for answers. What Sophie finds scandalizes and delights her: there are three different men who could be her dad. Eager to solve the mystery, she invites them to her upcoming wedding – without telling her mom. So begins the smash-hit musical, Mamma Mia!
The genderqueer indie rock cabaret staple has lost none of its bite, and found two definitive interpreters.
Buckland's entire body of work since the 80s argues that comedy is not a lower art form. THE FOOL'S GUIDE makes that case again, with a nuanced knack.
Day two of the festival brings us a not-so-high-school-musical, a magician's beef with American Airlines, and a ghost of parties past.
This production is a touch bittersweet – it’s NCTC Founder Ed Decker’s last programed show after passing the baton to new Artistic Director Ben Villegas Randle. His choice to present Hedwig is extremely prescient in a time where sexual identity is being both vilified and explored.
It’s almost unbelievable for me to admit that this was my first time seeing The Phantom of the Opera. Of course, I knew the iconic songs and had seen countless clips over the years, but experiencing the production live on stage for the first time was entirely different, haunting, and spine-chilling in the best way possible. From the chandelier drop to the monumental set pieces, the show truly lives up to its legendary reputation. The 2026 tour, directed by Harold Prince, serves as a revitalized version of the original production, featuring Maria Björnson’s iconic designs, musical staging, and choreography by Gillian Lynne. It is absolutely ravishing, and Seattle audiences are lining up hours early to witness the spectacle for themselves.
There are productions that succeed because the script is strong, and productions that succeed because performers manage to elevate familiar material. Theatre Artists Studio’s production of John Patrick Shanley’s OUTSIDE MULLINGAR achieves something rarer: a complete unity of tone, performance, language, and emotional truth.
Adapting Tim Winton for the stage is a notorious tightrope walk. His prose is so deeply rooted in the heavy, breathing expanse of the Western Australian landscape that stripping it down to fit between three theatre walls always risks losing the very magic that makes his books work.
From 8-12 April 2026, Adnan Production brought the longest-running American musical in Broadway history, Chicago, onto the stage of Graha Bhakti Budaya. It ran a total of eight shows (including the Gala performance), showcasing the many different talents within the theatre industry of Indonesia.
