Review: WICKED at Kansas City Music Hall

Musical theater reviewers infrequently and pleasantly rediscover an old friend.  “Wicked,” just opened at the venerable, 2400 seat Kansas City Music Hall with a recently refreshed cast, is an entertaining example.

Review: OTHELLO at Shakespeare Theatre Company

The Shakespeare Theatre Company has had a rich history of stars lured to its stage — not just to sell tickets through big names. The actors nearly always deliver — and the company attracts them because of the quality and rigor it retains.

Review: TRAVIATA May Not Be in Opera’s ABCs But Jaho Gives Lesson in Making It Her Own

Albanian soprano Ermonela Jaho wasn’t the first Violetta of this season’s LA TRAVIATA by Verdi at the Met. That means less rehearsal time and preparation in general—but you could have fooled me and the rest of the audience at Wednesday’s performance. She was in tiptop shape, after a bit of warming up, as if she’d been working in this production every day of her life. She doesn’t make her way to New York very often, but it’s certainly a welcome visit.

Review: MASTER HAROLD...AND THE BOYS at Geffen Playhouse

The Southland has had its share of memorable Fugard stagings, and the newly-opened revival of “MASTER HAROLD” at the Geffen Playhouse boasts an impressive roster of artists and creatives – onstage and off – who bring this tale vibrantly to life.

Video: 'Addio, del passato' from Michael Mayer-Directed LA TRAVIATA at The Metropolitan Opera

Watch Lisette Oropesa sings an excerpt from Violetta’s Act III aria in an early stage rehearsal. A cornerstone of the repertory, Giuseppe Verdi’s opera follows Violetta Valéry, a Parisian courtesan navigating love and sacrifice. The production is directed by Michael Mayer and features a staging designed to reflect the emotional scope of the score.
