Review: THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA at Keller Auditorium

Nearly 40 years after its Broadway premiere, THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA continues to cast its spell. I saw proof of that everywhere at the packed Keller Auditorium, including a young girl clutching a teddy bear wearing a tiny Phantom mask. The now and future PHANTOM fandom is in excellent hands.

Review: GHOST BROTHERS OF DARKLAND COUNTY at Road Less Traveled Theater

An unlikely pair creating an unlikely piece of theatre essentially sums up the new production of GHOST BROTHERS OF DARKLAND COUNTY now playing at Road Less Traveled Theater. Yes,  horror writer Stephen King has paired up with musician John (formerly Cougar) Mellencamp to write a musical. And somehow, the result is uniquely representative of both men in a most complementary fashion.

Review: PHANTOM OF THE OPERA at the Eccles Theater is Refreshed with Reverence

The national tour of PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, currently playing at the Eccles Theater in Salt Lake City, brings back the old favorite with refreshed reverence. The dark beauty of the original production remains intact while freshly burnished in this iteration, which features a new heartstopping chandelier drop that you’ll want to see for yourself.

Review: THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA at Orpheum Theatre Minneapolis

If you’ve lived in Minneapolis long enough, you’ve probably seen a touring Phantom (or at least pretended you did when talking to theatre friends). But the production now at the Orpheum through December 7 feels surprisingly alive. Not “reinvented,” not “modernized”—just performed with the kind of conviction that makes you remember why this show became a juggernaut in the first place.

Review: URINETOWN at Second Generation Theatre

The days when old fashioned musical comedies were drawn  from classic  love stories, silly high school antics and farces will always be tried and true. But more heady topics like mental illness, Alzheimers, race relations, big business, and corrupt governments also have found a place into the uniquely American canon of musicals. A ridiculously named musical, URINETOWN, is now playing at Shea's Smith Theatre, and the fine production by Second Generation Theatre not only entertains but provides much food for thought in this time of government unrest.
