Emmy, Grammy & Academy Award winner Common has been added to the list of honorees at Black Theatre United's inaugural Gala on Monday, October 30 at the Ziegfeld Ballroom.

The second annual Black Women On Broadway awards were held this week in New York and the star-studded event included appearances from the organization's founders, Danielle Brooks, Jocelyn Bioh, and Amber Iman and Broadway luminaries NaTasha Yvette Williams, Tonya Pinkins, Crystal Lucas Perry, LaChanze, Audra McDonald and more! Harlem Stage holds its 2023 gala on June 5. Taking place at the landmark Harlem Stage Gatehouse (150 Convent Avenue), the event kicks off the organization’s year-long 40th anniversary celebration, which will feature performances from many of the celebrated artists whose careers the organization has helped to launch, and will provide a platform for today’s most compelling emerging artists to break through.

Bernarda's Daughters celebrates Haitian Flag Day with a post-show panel and reception following the 7:30pm performance on Thursday, May 18, when The New Group and National Black Theatre host “Tout Moun Se Moun,” a panel featuring Haitian-American artists and cultural workers in discussion about the presence of Haitian art and culture in New York City and elsewhere in the diaspora. 

The New Group and National Black Theatre have released production photos of the world premiere of Bernarda's Daughters, by Diane Exavier, directed by Dominique Rider, featuring Pascale Armand, Alana Raquel Bowers, Kristin Dodson, Malika Samuel, Taji Senior and Tamara Tunie.

The 2023 Lucille Lortel Awards for Outstanding Achievement Off-Broadway were handed out this evening to recipients in 15 categories, with four honorary awards also bestowed. The Awards were distributed in a ceremony at NYU Skirball hosted by stars of stage and screen: Kevin Cahoon (Tony nominee, 'Shucked'), D'Arcy Carden ('The Thanksgiving Play'), Crystal Lucas-Perry (Tony nominee, 'Ain't No Mo''), Bonnie Milligan (Tony nominee, 'Kimberly Akimbo'), Arian Moayed (Tony nominee, 'A Doll's House'), and Tamara Tunie (The New Group's 'Bernarda's Daughters'). The Lucille Lortel Awards are produced by the Off-Broadway League and Lucille Lortel Theatre, with additional support provided by TDF.

Tamara Tunie will be interviewed about her long and brilliant career as a TV/ film star, theatre performer, and theatre producer/director, at 1p.m., May 17, at the Bruno Walter Auditorium, at the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts at Lincoln Center (111 Amsterdam Avenue at 65th Street), New York.

As many theatres get into the swing of their holiday shows and end of year giving campaigns, some good signs for the New York theater industry as tourism continues to rebound from the pandemic. While things still aren’t back to the record setting year of 2019, the city is anticipating ending the year at about 85% of those levels.

Liquid Theatre Collective and Randy Donaldson, Executive Producer, will present two additional private, invitation only readings of MARIAN, an original musical based on the life of world-renowned contralto, Marian Anderson.
