BWW Review: Audiences Give Praise to BOOK OF MORMON at The Music Hall At Fair ParkBWW Review: Audiences Give Praise to BOOK OF MORMON at The Music Hall At Fair Park
by Christina Hoth - Feb 3, 2019

The Book of Mormon swept through Dallas this week and could not have been better received by it's audiences. When auxiliary parking and bathroom breaks take enduring longer lines than those in certain sacred texts, you know the buzz about a show has hit it's peak. Wondrous comedic duo, Trey Parker and Matt Stone of South Park and Team America fame, first blessed our great nation with The Book of Mormon in 2011. The work was a daring collaboration with Robert Lopez, who we can thank for the genius music and lyrics on Avenue Q and a little song called "Let it Go" from Frozen. The story is at its core a simple tale of finding your voice and accepting one another. But true to the creator's particular brand of humor, the narrative is told through a gleefully tongue-in-cheek style production rife with vulgar humor and lewd imagery. (more...)

BWW Review: The National Tour of the Foul Mouthed and Big Hearted THE BOOK OF MORMON Returns to Minneapolis for its 4th EngagementBWW Review: The National Tour of the Foul Mouthed and Big Hearted THE BOOK OF MORMON Returns to Minneapolis for its 4th Engagement
by Jill Schafer - Nov 13, 2018

If theater is my religion, THE BOOK OF MORMON is my most sacred text. Not the actual book of course, rather the wildly irreverent musical written by the creators of SOUTH PARK (Trey Parker and Matt Stone) along with EGOT winner Robert Lopez. It is a nearly perfect musical, and definitely one of most joyous musicals I've ever seen. One of the brilliant things about THE BOOK OF MORMON is that it allows us to laugh at institutionalized religion (and let's face it, there are plenty of ridiculous things to laugh at) while still espousing the value of faith in oneself and one's friends and community, and 'working together to make this our paradise planet!' It truly is a feel-good musical that has the hugest heart, despite its unbelievably foul mouth. Back when it premiered in 2011, THE BOOK OF MORMON was what HAMILTON is today - a smash hit musical that swept the Tonys and was an impossible ticket to get. Fortunately seven years later tickets are a little easier to come by; tickets are still available (including rush and lottery, click here for details). If you're a fan of musical theater (who isn't offended by profanity and poking fun at religion), THE BOOK OF MORMON is definitely a must-see. And since it's still running on Broadway and touring the country, it likely won't be available for regional productions for many years, so this tour may be your only chance to see it for a while. Don't miss it! (more...)

BWW Review: THE BOOK OF MORMON Returns to Columbus and They're Still Something IncredibleBWW Review: THE BOOK OF MORMON Returns to Columbus and They're Still Something Incredible
by Christina Mancuso - May 27, 2018

Hello, again.  Columbus was glutton for punishment when THE BOOK OF MORMON returned to the Ohio Theatre for another blasphemous yet gut-wrenchingly hilarious week of musical theatre genius.  This time, the audience was snickering and giggling while they shuffled in their seats before the show even began. They knew they were about to embark on a show that can say "F-You, God" and still have the Mormon church take out a full page ad in the Playbill.  This is the brilliance of South Park writers, Trey Parker and Matt Stone, along with AVENUE Q co-creator Robert Lopez, who can cleverly win over people of all faith by poking fun at the Mormons with crass language that borders sacrilege. Why? Because at its core is a heartfelt story of brotherhood and self-discovery with lovable young men finding their way in a world ruled by uniformity and restriction. (more...)

BWW Review: THE BOOK OF MORMON at Kravis Center For The Performing ArtsBWW Review: THE BOOK OF MORMON at Kravis Center For The Performing Arts
by John Lariviere - Nov 26, 2017

The musical, The Book of Mormon, which lampoons both organized religion and traditional musical theatre, was conceived by Trey Parker, Matt Stone (creators of South Park), and Robert Lopez. This hysterically funny show is not for the faint of heart. While it comes with a parental advisory for explicit language, it should also come with a general caution to all for its possibly offensive representation of organized religion. However, as ridiculous and potentially offensive as some of this show may be, The Book of Mormon is a delectable guilty pleasure! (more...)
