It’s an opportunity to expand social connections within the community and to keep those juices flowing—the ones that boost and maintain cognitive skills. It’s joyous.
When we hear The Odd Couple, most people imagine the 1970s television series starring Walter Matthau and Art Carney. What some might not know was that it originated as a Neil Simon play on Broadway in 1965. After the success of the film and television versions, Simon adapted the play in 1985 to feature two female roommates, Florence Ungar and Olive Madison. Women’s Theatre Collective brings this play, The Odd Couple – Female Version, to the Ooley Theatre through May 5th.

A pandemic may be an odd time to debut a play, but that's what The Perkins Players did. Their first play -- a comedy partially about the tensions that arise when two very different people live in close proximity to each other -- was performed in front of audience members who had very likely spent a significant part of the past few months being forced to live in close quarters with other humans (except for anyone who lives by themselves). Would that make audience members relate or yearn for an escape about anything except being trapped together in one apartment?

The Everyman's production of Neil Simon's The Odd Couple opens for a Summer Season on Tuesday next, July 16th and continues until Saturday August, 17th , excluding Sunday and Mondays. This is one of Simon's best loved plays and it's so good he wrote it three times: a version for two men, and version for a man and a woman and this version, which is for two women, so let the Everyman introduce you to Florence and Olive.
While most audiences are familiar with Neil Simon's classic 1965 script, not many realize he wrote an updated version 20 years later for a specifically female cast. Kathleen Somssich and Genevieve Aichele star as the mismatched Florence Unger and Olive Madison in this endearing and high-spirited classic comedy. Instead of the poker party that begins the original version, Ms. Madison has invited the girls over for a game of Trivial Pursuit (and Mr. Simon gets more mileage out of those real 1980's Trivial Pursuit questions than we ever thought possible!) The upstairs Pidgeon sisters neighbors are replaced by the hilarious Constanzuela brothers, two 'classy Spanish gentlemen in double-breasted suits.' The Odd Couple - Female Version is a perfect opportunity to warm up the midwinter with laughter and friendship.
