Today, The Cleveland Orchestra announced program details for the 30th annual free community concert in downtown Cleveland. The Star-Spangled Spectacular, brought to you by Cuyahoga Arts & Culture and sponsored by KeyBank, will take place rain or shine on Wednesday, August 7 at 9:00 p.m. While this annual tradition typically takes place around Independence Day, this free family event will continue the community celebration in August due to the 2019 Major League Baseball All-Star Game / Play Ball Park activities throughout Downtown Cleveland in early July. This year's concert will be held on Cleveland's spacious Mall B, located at 300 St. Clair Avenue between the Global Center for Health Innovation and Cleveland Public Auditorium. This annual concert celebrates our nation and our incredible Northeast Ohio community with music performed by The Cleveland Orchestra.
Beginning in 1984, playwright August Wilson wrote a series of ten plays covering each decade of the 20th Century. Together they are known as the Pittsburgh Cycle. Seven Guitars, written in 1995, is set in 1948. The play opens and closes after the funeral of Floyd 'Schoolboy' Barton in the backyard of a Pittsburgh rooming house. In between those two acts Wilson uses flashbacks to tell us the stories of seven friends whose lives and dreams are compellingly human, and in some cases, breathtakingly tragic.

Lauren Gunderson's play, Silent Sky, is based on the true story of astronomer Henrietta Leavitt. Nearly 20 years before American women could vote, Henrietta Leavitt graduated from Radcliff College, took a job in Harvard's Observatory and, working from slides because women weren't allowed to touch the telescopes, she discovered the amount by which the star's brightness is dimmed by distance allows the star's distance from the earth to be calculated. Leavitt turned a two-dimensional picture of the sky into a three-dimensional one.
