Prolific duo Stiles and Drewe seem to be having a ball populating London with their works. While Mary Poppins - for which they wrote additional music and lyrics - looms large on the West End from the Prince Edward on Old Compton Street, director Will Keith opened another musical of theirs just south of the Strand at the Charing Cross Theatre. Interestingly enough, Soho Cinders serenades Poppins' address and is a proper celebration of Soho in all its idiosyncratic beauty.

The lines between myth and reality become increasingly blurred in Defenders. When Iceland was threatened with invasion by Germany in WW2, the allies decide to step in. The world premiere from Pandelia's Canary Yellow Company by Cailin Maureen Harrison, and directed by Reena Dutt, follows three American G.I.s who are shipwrecked on the remote island of Hrisey off Iceland's northern coast. The stranded G.I.s find themselves with missing weapons, few supplies, and a broken radio. They realize they must rely on the locals for survival but, like current-day warfare, the locals fear the loss of their culture, their women and their safety with the presence of foreigners on their land. Defenders opens on November 9, with performances continuing through December 8 at The Broadwater Black Box in Hollywood. One lower-priced preview takes place on November 8.

A musical coincidence occurred in Manhattan last night. Marilyn Maye was swinging on the West Side at Feinstein's/54 Below and Tom Wopat was doing the same on the East Side at the Beach Cafe. They are a bit similar in Night Club performance. I'm purposely using the word Night Club as opposed to Cabaret because both singers just sing their well chosen song list while exciting you musically with their great voices, jazz infused phrasing, and the secret sauce of being able to Swing. No theme or “theatrical” show here, it's just the extraordinary ability to interpret a song that keeps your eyes and ears focused on the performer from the opening to the closing notes.
Like a classic culinary creation, capable of continually and forever exciting the senses and defying the hazards of repetition, Marilyn Maye satisfied her audience's expectation for greatness last night with her performance at Feinstein's/54 Below. The perfect wine to compliment this musical feast was the artistry of Billy Stritch at the piano and some of his strategic vocal harmonies. Marilyn's song list is well known and loved by her fans and most folks in the packed house silently sing along, listen, and watch in total exhilaration as arguably the finest pop/jazz vocalist of our generation puts her special stamp on anything she sings.

These presentations are a testament to the strength of the High's photography department, recognized as one of the nation's leading programs, as well as the Museum's ongoing dedication to the Southeastern region.
Marilyn Maye continues to prove her energy and talents outstrip performers half her age. Her latest show at Feinstein's/54 Below in NYC is an amalgam of some of her greatest hits (the tried and true crowd pleasers) and some newer added songs (like the aforementioned title song) along with a healthy dose of some Broadway hit tunes (with special nods to Jerry Herman's 'Mame' and 'Hello Dolly' - both roles Ms. Maye has played).
