Sundance Institute's Theatre Program will support three ambitious new works for the stage, and their four women creators, at this year's two-week Theatre Lab at the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art (MASS MoCA). The Lab, which runs from November 10 to November 24th, will feature the concentrated and abundant time and resources, including individual casting from a dedicated acting company and daily rehearsals, that has long been a signature of Sundance's Labs. Playwright Lynn Nottage matters.  Winner of a MacArthur 'genius' grant, she's also been named one of the 100 most influential people in the world by Time Magazine in 2019.  She's the only woman to win two Pulitzer Prizes for drama (for RUINED in 2009 and SWEAT in 2017). Nottage calls FLOYD'S her 'side hustle' to SWEAT.  Commissioned by the Guthrie, it had its world premiere there this past weekend. On Wednesday, July 24, Maze, an immersive dance-theater piece co-directed by choreographer Reggie 'Regg Roc' Gray (The D.R.E.A.M. Ring) and theater artist Kaneza Schaal (Go Forth, Jack &), will premiere at The Shed as a new commission. Performed by masters of flexn, a form of street dance created in Brooklyn, New York, with roots in Jamaican bruk up, this intimate and powerful 90-minute work explores the puzzles, poetry, and infinite challenges of human coexistence. Celebrating its 50th anniversary with a series of performances throughout the city, around the country and around the world, Dr. Barbara Ann Teer's National Black Theatre (NBT) is partnering with the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture for "In Perpetual Flight: The Migration of the Black Body" at the Schomburg Center. The 6:30 p.m. event on Tuesday, April 16, is part of Carnegie Hall's Migrations: The Making of America, a citywide festival featuring events about the journeys of people who have shaped and influenced American culture. In celebration of its 50th anniversary as it's poised for a major capital redevelopment project of its current site, Dr. Barbara Ann Teer's National Black Theatre (NBT) is taking it to the streets with a robust season of programming and partnerships that transcends the walls of its building. As a cultural anchor in Harlem for the last half century, NBT has been at the forefront of transforming lives and community through the power of theater. Through its new program, NBT Beyond Walls, the institution will now produce activities citywide, nationally and internationally. Highlights of NBT's 50th season include partnerships and programming with Carnegie Hall, the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture and the World Famous Apollo Theater; the national tour of the critically acclaimed one-woman show The Peculiar Patriot; and the ongoing cultural exchange with the international sister institution, the National Black Theatre of Sweden, established in Stockholm in November 2018. Founded in 1968, the oldest continually run Black theater in New York City and one of America's longest continually operated theaters run by women of color will celebrate its half-century mark through October 2019. After having recently announced a reading series organized by Sarah Schulman and an Associate Artist program, Performance Space New York continues to explore new ways of shaping its organizational structure around the creative desires of artists with Octopus, a new artist-curated series of performances (December 2018-June 2019). Occurring simultaneously but independent from the Spring season's the No Series (January-May 2019) and Schulman's First Mondays: Reading of New Works in Progress (now-May 2019), Octopus gives select artists the autonomy to bring together performers on their radar, working in any number of disciplines, for evening-length programs.
