BWW Review: MARILYN MAYE Is Not to Be Missed at 54 Below

As has often been reported, Marilyn Maye appeared on the Tonight Show a record-setting 76 times and was Johnny Carson’s personal measure of excellence for any other singer who appeared on his show.  As a cabaret performer, it is not hyperbole to say she simply has no peer. She is the person that everyone who sets foot on a nightclub stage, sings a jazz riff, or dabbles in The Great American Songbook looks to for inspiration and instruction. There is no getting around it, Marilyn Maye is the undisputed gold standard.

BWW Review: FRANKENSTEIN Provides Timely Boost of Good Cheer at The Gaslight Theatre

FRANKENSTEIN is the latest to emerge from Gaslight's well-preserved crypt of spoofs and running gags, a brief but optimal antidote to the real horrors of the outside world. That's not an exaggeration; from a formulaic sense, reviewing Peter Van Slyke's mastery of the genre is simply gilding the lily. If you didn't find his work suitable before, you might thank him now for a much-needed boost of good cheer.

BWW Review: MICHAEL FEINSTEIN: SUMMERTIME SWING! Is a Lesson in Showmanship at Feinstein's 54 Below

I’m happy to report that SUMMERTIME SWING! is perfectly on-brand. Mr. Feinstein delivers some finely crafted gems from the Great American Songbook with his trademark energy and showmanship. I have seen Feinstein mostly in larger venues, and so the surprising element in this show was to see how intimately he engaged his audience in the cozier quarters of 54 Below. It was truly like being invited into his home. He had some expert help with the party. Mark McClean on drums and David Finck on bass are fantastic musicians. Tedd Firth on the piano was positively on fire in his creativity. The trio was a jazz lover's dream. It is a delight to hear musicians of this caliber do what they do.

BWW Interview: Valerie Schillawski, Jen Knight, and Deborah Moylan of LEGENDS AND BRIDGE at Dramatically Incorrect Theater Group & Dance Company

LEGENDS AND BRIDGE is a comedy imagining former, silver-screen legend Joan Crawford (matronly, washed-up, and pickled on spiked Pepsi) who invites Judy Garland (recently fired from her CBS TV show) and Bette Davis (bitter at no longer being the “Queen of Hollywood”) up to her Manhattan apartment in 1964 to live with her as they work on a “secret” film project. I find it difficult to believe anyone reading this does not already know about the three screen legends featured in the show. But just to be sure, I decided to interview the three actors portraying them to find out more about what it was like to portray such well-known personalities.
