BWW Review: Dynamic, Must See HAIR Commemorates Kent State Massacre of 1970

On May 4, 1970, over a period of 13-seconds, nearly 70 shots were fired upon Kent State University unarmed students by the Ohio State National Guard. The students, and their supporters, were protesting against the bombing of Cambodia by the United States, part of the ill-conceived Vietnam incursion. Forever after, to be known as 'The Kent State Massacre,' the attack killed four and wounded nine others.

Review: American Tribal Rock Musical HAIR is Still Relevant After 50 Years

HAIR was written more than 50 years ago by Gerome Ragni, James Rado and Galt MacDermot and broke new ground in musical theatre by defining the genre of 'rock musical' as well as using a racially integrated cast and inviting the audience onstage to join in the a?oeBe-Ina?? finale. But at the time it opened off Broadway at the end of 1967, it seemed unlikely that HAIR would be relevant five decades later. A product of the hippie counter-culture, sexual revolution, and Vietnam War protests of the late 1960s, several of its songs became anthems of the anti-war movement, while its profanity, depiction of the use of illegal drugs, treatment of open sexuality, irreverence for the American flag, and full-frontal nude scene caused much comment and controversy at the time. Yet today it seems what was shocking has become so common place that even a few children were in the audience at the performance I attended.

BWW Review: Peace, Love, and the Sun Shines in Theatre UAB's HAIR: THE AMERICAN TRIBAL LOVE-ROCK MUSICAL at Alys Stephens Center.

Theatre UAB is offering a rendition of 'Hair' worth breaking out your vintage Rolling Stones T-Shirt or fringe vest and bell-bottoms. Theatre UAB has produced a wonderfully entertaining, and relevant and modernized rendition of this classic rock musical. This is for the youthful spirited, and those who want to make love, and not war.

HAIR Opening At The Long Beach Playhouse Studio

On October 12, the Long Beach Playhouse Studio Theatre closes its 2019 season with the iconic musical tribute to the 1960s, Hair. The play was written 50 years ago by Gerome Ragni, James Rado and Galt MacDermot. At the time, it seemed unlikely that Hair would be relevant five decades later but it it's true. The songs are still infectiously energetic. It's a coming of age story and a love story with tough decisions and a hard-hitting ending. It's lost none of its sparkle and a new generation is ready for the message.

BWW Review: THE 60'S ROCK MUSICAL HAIR OPENS IN KANSAS CITY AT THE BLACK BOX THEATRE

Join the highly talented tribe of HAIR as Padgett Productions brought the opening night to Kansas City on Saturday, September 7. This is one of the top productions of the highly acclaimed musical that I have had the good fortune to review. Return to an age of hippies, free-love, and the tribe as you enter the small newly renovated Black Box Theatre in the West Bottoms Entertainment District. If you're not ready to party, you are probably in the wrong place.

BWW Review: Roxy Regional Theatre's HAIR Will Knock Your Clothes Off, Thanks to Kinzer and Bowie

Any directors planning new productions of Hair - wherever they may be all over this colorful country in which we live - might be advised to follow the lead of Clarksville's Roxy Regional Theatre and cast Mike Kinzer and Ryan Bowie as Berger and Claude, a pair of actorscharacters who together define the term "sheer perfection." Backed up by an ensemble of passionate, totally committed actors who bring "The American Tribal Love-Rock Musical" to life, Kinzer and Bowie are ideally suited to their roles and the production in which they star is by far the best we've seen at the Roxy in many a moon.
