Review: SOMEWHERE OVER THE BORDER at Cygnet Theatre

“Somewhere Over the Border,” now playing at Cygnet Theatre through March 15, wraps that hope in music, metaphor, and a road-trip structure in a production that is charming and colorful on its surface, but anchored by performances strong enough to carry its deeper weight.

Interview: Carlos Mendoza on bringing SOMEWHERE OVER THE BORDER to life at Cygnet Theatre

Cygnet Theatre’s Somewhere Over the Border is a bold, musical journey that blends magical realism with a vibrant Latin American soundtrack, from cumbia to hip hop to boleros, created by playwright Brian Quijada (Off-Broadway’s Mexodus). At the helm is director and choreographer Carlos Mendoza, also the Education & Outreach Director at Cygnet Theatre, whose personal connection to the story infuses the production with heart and authenticity. In this interview, Mendoza shares what drew him to the show, how he brought its world to life on stage, and why this story resonates with audiences today. The production runs from February 18 through March 15 in The Joseph Clayes III Theater at Cygnet Theatre.

Review: A MAGICAL HOLIDAY: CHRISTMAS AT THE JOAN at Cygnet Theatre

Cygnet Theatre’s “A Magical Holiday: Christmas at The Joan” is precisely what its title promises: a bright, polished, joy-forward holiday revue that knows its job is to lift spirits, sparkle confidently, and send you back into December humming.

Review: THE SILVER FOX: A FAMILY OPERA IN ONE ACT at The Landmark Center

The Silver Fox is based on the enchanting bayou legend of a young girl who transforms into a silver fox to harness her magical powers. With music by Libby Larsen that beautifully weaves Cajun folk tunes into a lyrical, lilting fable, this opera captivates audiences of all ages.

Review: SWEENEY TODD is a Bloody Good Time at Palm Canyon Theatre

What is it about a good horror story that draws audiences by the cart load?  Is it the adrenaline surge of danger around every corner, even as the viewer remains safely out of danger? Or is it the exploration of the dark side of man’s psyche, feeding a vicarious blood lust in the deep recesses of our primordial hind brains? Or, is it a bit of schadenfreude, particularly if the victim is “deserving”?  All of things await the anxious theatregoer in Palm Canyon’s Theatre’s latest venture, Steven’s Sondheim’s macabre masterpiece “Sweeney Todd”.

Review: THE ADDAMS FAMILY at San Diego Musical Theatre

They’re creepy, they’re kooky, they’re even a little bit spooky - it's THE ADDAMS FAMILY and they’re at San Diego Musical Theatre through October 29th.  This musical inspired by the popular comic strip, television show, and movies is filled with music, and dancing and is a perfect seasonal treat -  a little silly, a little spicy, and a little scary.
