Here is a list of some of my favorite theatre experiences in San Diego in 2022! This is by no means a complete list of everything that was excellent in this past year, but now we get to turn towards 2023 and all of the fantastic theatre that is sure to come our way.

THE MYSTERY OF IRMA VEP playing at Diversionary Theatre through December 24th provides a lot of laughter in this zany, fast-paced comedy.  A send-up of Victorian Gothic literary tropes, Sci-fi B movies, and more this two-person farce offers queer, high-camp humor making this a great show option for anyone looking for a holiday-themed show alternative.

Diversionary Theatre announced the lineup of special performances of The Mystery of Irma Vep and show discussions taking place before and after performances, as well as the pre-show and post-show events taking place in the Clark Cabaret & Bar.

Diversionary Theatre has announced the cast and creative team for its production of The Mystery of Irma Vep by Charles Ludlam, co-directed by Diversionary Executive Artistic Director Matt M. Morrow and Allison Spratt Pearce. The Mystery of Irma Vep will run December 1 - December 24 at Diversionary Theatre in University Heights. 

Moonlight Stage Productions will welcome audiences to the renaissance for its third musical of its 2022 season when it produces the hilarious Broadway hit “Something Rotten!” at the Moonlight Amphitheatre, July 20 through August 6 at 8 p.m.

This critically acclaimed musical won four Tony Awards in 2010 including Best Musical and Best Original Score, four Drama Desk Awards including Outstanding Musical and Outstanding Music, and four Outer Critic Circle Awards including Outstanding Musical and Outstanding Score.

Neil Simon's THE SUNSHINE BOYS now playing at the North Coast Repertory Theatre about the reunion of a pair of elderly vaudeville comedians still has a few laughs but seems to have lost its shine.

THE SUNSHINE BOYS deftly showcases the late Neil Simon's brilliant ear for sidesplitting dialogue and his sharp eye for physical comedy. Yet beneath the raucous laughter are two vulnerable people struggling to make sense of their lives. North Coast Repertory Theatre has earned numerous accolades by critics and audiences alike for capturing the nuances of Simon's memorable characters who wrestle with love, loss, work, family and aging. Simon's plays historically sell out rapidly, so early ticket buying is highly recommended.

ROCK OF AGES, now playing at the Cygnet Theatre in Old Town through August 25th, is a rock 'n' roll fairytale that wants everyone to have 'nothin' but a good time.'

Season 17 kicks off with the crowd-pleasing, Tony-nominated jukebox musical Rock of Ages. Directed by Sean Murray, this exhilarating rock and roll experience runs July 2 through August 25, 2019. Opening Night for media is Saturday, July 6 at 8:00PM.

As Jordan Berman pounds the New York City pavement searching for Mr. Right, he wards off lonely nights with his trio of close-knit girlfriends. As singles' nights turn into bachelorette parties, Jordan must face his own capacity to love and be loved. This hilarious and heart-wrenching Broadway comedy dives into the trenches of urban single life and the aspirational gay wedding, reminding us that you can't hurry love-no matter how much you wish you could.

The Heart of Rock & Roll, inspired by the music of Huey Lewis and the News, is making its world premiere at The Old Globe in San Diego, led by Broadway's Matt Doyle and Katie Rose Clarke. Huey Lewis himself chatted with The San Diego Union-Tribune about bringing his music to the stage.
