Little Shop of Horrors, the musical version of the 1960 cult film classic, has been as indestructible as Audrey II, its ravenous man-eating, soul music-loving plant. The 1986 remake, starring Rick Moranis, was the basis for the Broadway musical, which actually got its start before the Moranis remake, in an Off-Broadway production four years earlier. Since it finally reached Broadway in 2003, it has become a mainstay in regional and community theatre. The show's success can be traced to its Alan Menken/Howard Ashman score, a love letter to early '60s pop styles, including doo-wop, Motown, soul, and Phil Spector girl groups (the three-female members of the Greek chorus that hover in nearly every scene are named Crystal, Ronette, and Chiffon in Spector's honor).
Producers Ken Davenport, Bob Gaudio and NETworks Presentations with The Fabulous Fox Theatre will welcome the smash-hit musical, A BEAUTIFUL NOISE: THE NEIL DIAMOND MUSICAL, to the Fabulous Fox, making its St. Louis premiere October 29 – November 10.

Jukebox musicals are a polarizing topic in the world of musical theatre. For fans of an artist or group whose music is used as the score of a musical, these can often be favorites due to the familiarity and affinity one might have for the songbook. For musical purists, however, jukebox musicals often feel like one is being cheated out of a new, original score, not to mention the fact that many times these types of shows employ very thinly constructed books (e.g., ALL SHOOK UP) or stories that verge on the truly absurd (e.g., ESCAPE TO MARGARITAVILLE). But there are a rare few of these productions that get the mix right – making them enjoyable for both sides of the theatrical aisle and can often be the recipe for a megahit. Such is the case with JERSEY BOYS, the 2005 Tony Award winning musical which tells the story of the formation, success, and breakup of the hit Rock and Roll group, The Four Seasons including lead singer, Frankie Valli. This high energy, audience favorite opens the 64th season for Osceola Arts in Kissimmee and is a highly entertaining and solid production – one that is sure to please fans of the show and newcomers alike.
Oh, what a night! I just spent 2 1/2 hours of pure delight listening to four phenomenal vocalists in Omaha Community Theatre’s current production of JERSEY BOYS. It will be difficult to pinpoint what I liked best (everything) and easy to point out what didn’t work (absolutely nothing.) OCP has a blockbuster on its hands.

What did our critic think of JERSEY BOYS at Derby Dinner Playhouse? The biography jukebox musical is quite the unique brand of theatre experience. So many come to mind in recent years (Beautiful, The Cher Show, MJ, Tina, etc.), but you could easily argue that Jersey Boys was the first of its kind in the modern theatre landscape.
