BWW Review: MAS THEATRE'S NUNSENSE JAMBOREE FUSES HEART, COMEDY, CHARM OF DAYS PAST at Carrollwood Cultural Center BWW Review: MAS THEATRE'S NUNSENSE JAMBOREE FUSES HEART, COMEDY, CHARM OF DAYS PAST at Carrollwood Cultural Center
by Deborah Bostock-Kelley - Oct 25, 2019

On Thursday night, director Aaron Washington took us to church. Nunsense Jamboree, the third in the series, combined the comedic influences of Laugh-In, silly jokes, a puppet nun, and crafty innuendos, five outstanding voices with an adorable set created by Paul Berge at Carrollwood Cultural Center. MAS Theatre captured the authentic charm of a country-western jamboree a?" like the kind you'd see set up at the fairgrounds. All that was missing was a hand raised, waving in praise and meat on a stick. I also had flashbacks of Sunday sermons with my grandma, with much better music provided by Mary Jo Hahn, Rusty Wirt, Wink Warren, and Valerie Frege. (more...)

BWW Review: THE JUNGLE BOOK, A MUSICAL IS ENTERTAINING, IMMERSIVE EXPERIENCE at Carrollwood Players Theatre BWW Review: THE JUNGLE BOOK, A MUSICAL IS ENTERTAINING, IMMERSIVE EXPERIENCE at Carrollwood Players Theatre
by Deborah Bostock-Kelley - Jun 9, 2019

Seldom does a reviewer get to see 'behind the curtain,' the director's enthusiastic vision of the set carefully sketched in a notepad long before it becomes an actual intricate tiered wooden platform or the director painstakingly folding pieces of paper together that would eventually be black lit painted, lighted and turned into the faces of the animals that would be called the jungle home. On Friday, the painted paper puppets that I saw months ago from director Drew Eberhard came to reality on top of the heads of the actors. Besides Jekyll and Hyde, the set of The Jungle Book Musical at Carrollwood Player is one of my favorites to date. (more...)

BWW Review: THE BEST LITTLE WHOREHOUSE IN TEXAS a High-Energy, Fun Escape at Carrollwood Players Theatre BWW Review: THE BEST LITTLE WHOREHOUSE IN TEXAS a High-Energy, Fun Escape at Carrollwood Players Theatre
by Deborah Bostock-Kelley - Mar 3, 2019

Like Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper radiating adoration and raw sexual chemistry, singing "Shallow" at the Oscars, as Sheriff Ed Earl Dodd's hand roved up Miss Mona Stangley's lace stockings while they nuzzled on the couch, Angel Tuider Frale and Michael c De Baca scorched the stage at Carrollwood Players. The yearning for something more, an unrequited love was palatable. That's called great acting. (more...)

BWW Review: MAS THEATRE OLIVER - SPECTACULAR ENTERTAINMENT at Carrollwood Cultural Center BWW Review: MAS THEATRE OLIVER - SPECTACULAR ENTERTAINMENT at Carrollwood Cultural Center
by Deborah Bostock-Kelley - Jul 29, 2018

There's no wonder why Oliver sold out at Carrollwood Cultural Center. Celebrating their 10th anniversary and revisiting the first show that debuted at the center with two of the original actors - Terry Larosa and Kimberly Rostas, MAS Theatre's Oliver was spectacular entertainment. Under the exceptional direction of Tracy Stemm-Crews, musical direction by Mary Jo Hahn, choreography talents of Ashley Ryan Lord and Aaron Washington, lighting by Keith Eisenstadt, and costumes by Heather Cleveland, there wasn't a moment that went too fast, an actor that needed to pick up speed, a set change that took you away from the story, choreography that didn't have perfect pace. Everything worked in this high-energy production - especially the cast using the balcony during the beautiful Who Will Buy and by creating an immersive experience for the audience by going up and down the aisles.
