In search of new audiences, the Met has followed Terence Blanchard’s FIRE SHUT UP IN MY BONES with the jazz musician/composer’s first opera, CHAMPION, the story of closeted boxer Emile Griffith’s rise and fall from grace. Honestly, never have I heard people whose usual venues are Madison Square Garden, Yankee Stadium and Monday Night Football on ESPN talk about how they “wanted to see the new opera at the Met.”

Goodspeed Musicals will kick off its first full season of musicals since 2019 with the spring production of Kander and Ebb’s dazzling and daring classic, Cabaret. The Kit Kat Klub comes alive for the first time on the Goodspeed stage from May 13 – July 3 at The Goodspeed in East Haddam, Conn.

The first ever Tony Award winner for Best Musical, based on the book by Sam and Bella Spewack with music and lyrics by Cole Porter, is to be directed by Johanna McKenzie Miller. In a twist of fate, Miller will make her mainstage directorial debut at the Marriott Theatre roughly 20 years after making her acting debut under the very same spotlight. Musical direction for this production is led by Jeff Award winner Ryan T. Nelson with choreography by Jeff Award nominee Alex Sanchez.

Then, the SFJAZZ Collective, comprised of eight of the finest performers in jazz today, celebrates the 50th anniversaries of two influential albums: In A Silent Way by Miles Davis and Stand! by Sly and the Family Stone. Each member of the collective will rearrange songs from both seminal albums in addition to preparing an original composition as part of the group's mission to perform fresh arrangements of works by modern masters and newly commissioned pieces by each SFJAZZ Collective member. Vocalist and Across the Universe film standout Martin Luther McCoy and master guitarist Adam Rogers join the all-star ensemble for their 2019-2020 season as the first vocalist and guitarist to be part of the SFJAZZ Collective.
