Gounod's masterpiece of grand French opera, Roméo et Juliette, continues San Diego Opera's 2021-2022 season when it opens on Saturday, March, 26, 2022 for four performances at the San Diego Civic Theatre. Additional performances are March 29, April 1, and 3 (matinee), 2022.

The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center begins the month of May with Deeply Inspired—a program of pieces by composers from four eras and four cultures—featuring baritone Yunpeng Wang, pianist Michael Brown, violinists Kristin Lee and Danbi Um, violist Matthew Lipman, and cellists Nicholas Canellakis and David Finckel (May 3). Spring highlights include the world premiere of Mark-Anthony Turnage's Massarosa for Bassoon, Two Violins, Viola, and Cello with bassoonist Peter Kolkay and the Calidore Quartet(May 16); and the New York premiere of Andrew Norman's Escher for String Quartet performed by the Escher String Quartet (May 7). Both works are CMS co-commissions.

There's a plethora of performances going on all over New York City, in addition to interesting, entertaining and fascinating productions that are just a hop, skip and jump away. Those of us with long enough memories can recall some exciting nights at Opera Orchestra of New York's concerts at Carnegie Hall, with Eve Queler at the helm. It's reputed that Donizetti's PARISINA D'ESTE made quite a stir with Montserrat Caballe in the spotlight in 1974--but anyone expecting history to repeat itself when Queler mounted the opera for Angela Meade at the Rose Theatre last week was wildly disappointed.
