Matthew Smedal

Matthew Smedal is a music supervisor, music director, conductor, composer, and lyricist based in New York City. He served as music director and conductor for Broadway’s Mrs. Doubtfire and its Original Broadway Cast Recording. His music supervision credits include Annie at Madison Square Garden starring Whoopi Goldberg, the national tours of Annie, and the second national tour of Mrs. Doubtfire. He also served as associate music supervisor for Mrs. Doubtfire’s first national tour.

Off-Broadway, Smedal was music director and conductor for Clueless: The Musical, starring Dove Cameron. His national touring credits as music director and conductor include The Bodyguard, starring Deborah Cox; the first national tour of Matilda; Ghost: The Musical; and Catch Me If You Can.

His regional music direction credits include Come From Away at Sacramento Music Circus, South Pacific at Bucks County Playhouse, Elf and Mary Poppins at The 5th Avenue Theatre, the world premiere of Anne of Green Gables at Goodspeed Opera House, Oliver! at Maltz Jupiter Theatre, An American in Paris at Cape Playhouse, and Singin’ in the Rain at Ogunquit Playhouse.

As a writer, Smedal is the composer and lyricist of The Goose Girl: A New Musical, based on the novel by Shannon Hale and currently in development. He also composed the incidental music for Denis Jones’s production of Misery at Maltz Jupiter Theatre.

His work as a pianist includes Cole Porter’s La Revue des Ambassadeurs at Opéra de Rennes and accompanying Deborah Cox at the 2018 US Open Women’s Singles Final between Serena Williams and Naomi Osaka.
