The Angry Brigade was a small cell of left-wing, anti-elitist urban guerillas in 1970s Britain. They emerged in a society blighted by government cuts, high unemployment, austerity measures and deregulation, at a time of global political and cultural upheaval: riots and revolutions, the black-power and women's lib movements, protests against the war in Vietnam.

Get ready to indulge in the Viennese torte known as Franz Lehar's comedic operetta The Merry Widow (Die Lustige Witwe). Set in the heart of vibrant fin de siecle Paris, the wealthy widow Hanna Glawari schemes to win the heart of dashingly handsome Count Danilo. A scandalous caper ensues while suitors conspire to obtain the widow's fortune.

The Season opens with Lehar's The Merry Widow (Die Lustige Witwe), an Art Nouveau-inspired comedic operetta (October 20-28, 2018, Queen Elizabeth Theatre) and continues with Puccini's much-loved La Boheme (February 14-24, 2019, Queen Elizabeth Theatre).

Opera Santa Barbara will open its 2015-16 season with a uniquely compelling, film noir-inspired production of Mozart's timeless masterpiece Don Giovanni on November 6 and 8. Performances will take place at 7:30 pm on Friday, November 6, and at 2:30 pm on Sunday, November 8, in Santa Barbara's historic Granada Theatre. “Internationally renowned … for her unique combination of exquisite singing and hilarious comic acting” (Vanity Fair), Deborah Voigt turns her talents to operetta next month, when she makes her title role debut in Lehár's The Merry Widow. In a new production from award-winning director Kelly Robinson at Michigan Opera Theatre, the soprano will head a cast that also features Roger Honeywell, Amanda Squitieri, Aaron Blake, and Richard Suart as Baron Mirko Zeta, with Gerald Steichen leading from the pit (tonight, April 11–19).
