BIO
Emma Denson is a New York City-based director and playwright. Currently, she is working with Ukrainian scholar Maria Rewakowicz to write a new, bilingual adaptation of Hunger, a forgotten play about Holodomor (the famine genocide in Ukraine in the 1930s) that was written by Bohdan Boychuk. The play is set to have a reading at the Ukrainian Museum in May 2023. Most recently she directed I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change at Stagedoor Manor, and The Taming of Kate (Triskelion Arts, WAXWorks Festival): a proof of concept for her retelling of The Taming of the Shrew that puts the play in conversation with The Feminine Mystique and the Italian immigrant experience. The play will have its full-length premiere at Salvatore LaRussa Theatre in May 2023. She is the co-playwright of FROST, which is a TYA piece that premiered with the award-winning children’s theatre company, The Basket Cases, in 2018. The play was the recipient of two arts grants, and featured an original score composed by her brother, Eli Denson. She is also the co-playwright of The Opioid Project: a commissioned theatre for social change piece that centres the opioid epidemic in America. The play was filmed during the pandemic and distributed to schools across the state of Mississippi. Other recent credits include: Blanche and Stella (Assistant Director, Lenfest Center for the Arts), A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Assistant Director/Lysander Understudy), Lenfest Center for the Arts), Emily (Director, The Chain), The Book of Mountains and Seas (Production Assistant, St. Ann’s Warehouse), Wednesday: A Documentary (Production Assistant, New York Live Arts). www.emmadenson.com
