BWW Review: Elephant and Piggie's WE ARE IN A PLAY!'Brings Favorite Children's Book to Life at Orlando Shakes
by Kimberly Moy - April 11, 2016
As a kid I was obsessed with elephants and if you took a look at my desk today, you would think that I still am. I wish that the 'Elephant and Piggie' books were around when I was a kid, but alas, author Mo Willems didn't create them until 2007. Since then, these books have been a hit with kids because of their humor and easy to read comic book style writing. Now Elephant and Piggie have left the page for the stage in Orlando Shakespeare's production of ELEPHANT AND PIGGIE 'WE ARE IN A PLAY!'

BWW Review: Ambitious BRING IT ON's Stars Shine at Wayne Densch PAC
by Matt Tamanini - April 04, 2016
For community theatres, producing a musical can be ambitious for any number of reasons; the difficulty of the music, the complexity of the dramatic content, the number of settings required, the size of the cast needed, but it is difficult to imagine a more ambitious project than the Wayne Densch Performing Arts Center's recent production of BRING IT ON THE MUSICAL. Though the stage adaptation's story, script, and score are completely original, they do draw inspiration from the series of teen films of the same name set in the high-stakes world of competitive high school cheerleading. Against that backdrop, the story is a funny, surprisingly touching tale of female empowerment and friendship.
BWW Review: Orlando Shakes' VANYA AND SONIA AND MASHA AND SPIKE is Fresh, Dynamic Comedy
by April Montgomery - April 03, 2016
I recently read that unless material comes out of living experience, it does not live. The truth of this premise resonated clearly when I attended preview night for Orlando Shakespeare's final play of its regular season, VANYA AND SONIA AND MASHA AND SPIKE, a show with an unmistakable heartbeat.

BWW Review: DIRTY DANCING is a Disappointing Disservice to Original Film
by Matt Tamanini - March 30, 2016
Since the dawn of the genre, stage shows have been adapted from various sources; books, other plays, poems, historical events, and, increasingly over the past two decades, movies. The best projects based on movies take what is special from the source material and use that as inspiration to form a fresh stage adaptation. However, the DIRTY DANCING National Tour, playing at Orlando's Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts through Sunday, April 3rd, focuses so intently on recreating the minutia of the film, that it completely misses what made it so captivating in the first place; authentic, compelling characters and an intimate, passionate story.

by Matt Tamanini - March 29, 2016
Though there are obvious similarities, the life of a professional ballet dancer and the life of a musical theatre actor are quite different. From the physical demands to the number of performances, transitioning from one to the other is no small feat.  Just ask Jennifer Winton, who plays Johnny Castle's original dance partner, Penny Johnson, in the DIRTY DANCING musical that opens its week-long run at Orlando's Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts tonight.

BWW Review: Mad Cow's LONG DAY'S JOURNEY INTO NIGHT is an Uneven American Masterpiece
by Matt Tamanini - March 28, 2016
Eugene O'Neill's epic LONG DAY'S JOURNEY INTO NIGHT is undoubtedly one of the most venerated works of the American theatre. With a star-studded Broadway revival set to open in April, it is a show that is never far from the theatergoing public's consciousness. While that can be a blessing for theatre companies anxious to attract audiences based on the title's Tony and Pulitzer Prize winning resume, it can also mean that memories of previous incarnations can set the bar unattainably high. Orlando's Mad Cow Theatre has assembled an impressive cast for their production running through April 17th, however, for nearly all of the show's four-hour running timing, the four incredibly talented actors seem to be performing four very different versions of the play. Irrespective of each other, they each have moments where they are moving, and even mesmerizing, but when placed together into the show's larger context, the disjointed perspectives become distracting. From mismatched accents to the production's ever-shifting tone, it's difficult to hone in on director Mark Edward Smith's specific voice for this masterpiece of family drama.
