BWW Review: CURIOUS INCIDENT is a Beautiful, but Distant Look at the Life of an Outsider
by Matt Tamanini - November 02, 2016
In THE CURIOUS INCIDENT OF THE DOG IN THE NIGHT-TIME, running through November 6th at the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts, the world is full of chaos, and one special boy named Christopher is intent on figuring it out. With a dizzying assault of sights, sounds, and information that over stimulate both Christopher and the audience, the first National Tour of CURIOUS INCIDENT is a theatrical spectacle that theatre lovers won't want to miss.

by BWW News Desk - November 01, 2016
The Orange County Board of County Commissioners unanimously voted this afternoon to approve an amendment that would provide an additional $45 million for the completion of Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts. This is the third and final vote that officially allows for the funding, which is made up of monies collected from the Tourist Development Tax. The funding plan, proposed in a memo from Orange County Mayor Teresa Jacobs on September 9, 2016, was unanimously approved by both the Tourist Development Council on September 30, 2016 and the Orlando City Council on October 24, 2016.
BWW Review: ROCK THE PRESIDENTS is a Rockin' Ride Through Presidential History
by Matt Tamanini - November 01, 2016
As our presidential election (thankfully) moves into its final days, the Orlando Repertory Theatre is currently serving up a delightful injection of fun and patriotism that might just do the trick to get your spirits up about exercising your civic duty. Directed by Jeffrey M. Revels, ROCK THE PRESIDENTS runs through November 13th, and no matter what the outcome next Tuesday, this silly, informative 55-minute musical will have you tapping your toes and thinking about the best that America has to offer.
BWW Blog: Clarissa Moon - METAMORPHOSES at CFCArts Brings New Life to Old Myths
by Guest Blogger: Clarissa Moon - November 01, 2016
When it comes to Greek mythology, I'm a total geek. I love the Percy Jackson series, and pour over those huge illustrated mythology books. Not only do I know major gods like Zeus and Aphrodite, but I can name all four gods of the wind and all of the rivers of the Underworld (NERD ALERT). So naturally, I was excited to see these myths come to life onstage at Central Florida Community Arts.

BWW Review: Orlando Shakes' STUART LITTLE is the Pick-Me-Up We All Need
by Kimberly Moy - October 31, 2016
Orlando Shakes' STUART LITTLE delights young audiences and keeps the grown ups entertained too. This play is filled with colorful adventure, limitless optimism, and easy laughs that is exactly the pick-me-up needed this time of year. While most of the performances are sold-out to school audiences, there are still a few shows left for the general public to catch. If you have young ones this is definitely too much fun to miss.
Gene Gillette Says CURIOUS INCIDENT is Unlike 'Anything You've Ever Seen Before'
by Matt Tamanini - October 31, 2016
Tomorrow night, for the first time a straight play will open at the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts as part of the Fairwinds Broadway in Orlando series. However, this play is unlike nearly anything else you've ever seen before. Based on the 2003 book by Mark Haddon, THE CURIOUS INCIDENT OF THE DOG IN THE NIGHT-TIME dives deep into the mind of Christopher Boone, a special boy intent on getting to the bottom of a neighborhood mystery. With creative choreography, lights, and technology, the play takes on a life of its own. The show won five Tony Awards in 2015, including Best Play, and last week, I spoke with Gene Gillette, who plays Christopher's father Ed while the tour was in Greenville, SC, to help explain why this play is so special in a theatrical world so focused on musicals.

BWW Review: Unseen Images' FAR AWAY Creates a Disturbing Dream World at The Venue
by Matt Tamanini - October 29, 2016
From the moment you entire The Venue and see Amanda Hudson-Giese sitting in a rocking chair on stage, there is a dream-like quality to Unseen Images Theatre's production of Caryl Churchill's 2000 play, FAR AWAY. This dream-like quality continues as the play-proper begins, but it quickly spirals into a jarring nightmare, in which fragments of scenes and stories present a disjointed look at a world at war with itself. Less interested in sharing a complete narrative, FAR AWAY instead sets up brief, bizarre glimpses into a world that appears to be devolving into a dystopian hellscape.
BWW Review: Beth Marshall Presents' THE GLASS MENAGERIE is Restless Blend of Anger and Ambition
by Matt Tamanini - October 29, 2016
'Why, Tom- are you always so restless?' These words from a worried mother to her only son in Tennessee Williams' THE GLASS MENAGERIE could very much be used to describe Beth Marshall Presents' ambitious telling of this seminal American memory play. The production, which runs at the Garden Theatre through November 6th, has palpably amplified the nervous energy in this normally introspective character drama. As directed by Marshall, THE GLASS MENAGERIE seems to be playing with far more urgent stakes than are normally associated with the hindsight of the play, which creates more interpersonal conflict and tension, but robs the characters of their inherent pathos.

BWW Review: THE GOD GAME Provides Unrealistic Look at Religion and Politics at Mad Cow
by Matt Tamanini - October 27, 2016
Opening just three weeks before the presidential election, a play analyzing the confluence of religion and politics on a personal level should be a perfect theatrical opportunity. However, in light of this particular presidential contest, the handling of the issue feels simplistic and dated in THE GOD GAME, running at Orlando's Mad Cow Theatre through November 20th. This intimate, regional premiere from playwright Suzanne Bradbeer feels more like a thought exercise devoid of real world calculations than an honest introspection of a third rail in American politics.
Unseen Images Theatre to Stage Dark Political Drama FAR AWAY
by BWW News Desk - October 27, 2016
This election season, Unseen Images Theatre will be producing a fictional political drama / nightmare (directed by Jamie DeHay), that parallels a lot of the issues that we are facing in our current political environment.

BWW Review: Theatre UCF's YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN Shatters Lofty Expectations
by Matt Tamanini - October 26, 2016
Last week, I wrote an article looking at why Central Florida's collegiate theatre programs, and in particular Theatre UCF, consistently produce content at or above the level of local professional theatres. The next night I went to see UCF's production of Mel Brooks' YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN, the musical adaptation of one my favorite films. So, needless to say, as I walked into the theater, my expectations were already exceptionally high. Fortunately for me, and everyone else at the sold-out performance, this incredibly talented cast not only met those expectations, but shattered them.

Q & A With 13: THE MUSICAL's Director Roberta Emerson
by Libby Champion - October 25, 2016
Montverde Academy in Montverde, Florida will be showing the critically acclaimed 13: THE MUSICAL starting this week. The show centers on 13-year-old Evan Goldman who moves from New York City to Indiana. Goldman must escape gossip and blackmail if he hopes to make friends and find peace and happiness at his new school. The play deals with the hardships of leaving familiar places for unfamiliar ones, fitting in with your peers, and transitioning from youth to adulthood. Montverde Academy's production will be entered in the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts Applause Awards for the 2016-17 year. Unlike many school productions in which teenage kids play adults, '13' is unique since kids are playing kids their age. Broadway World Orlando's Libby Champion caught up with the director of the production, Roberta Emerson, to talk about what that experience is like for kids and to see how composer Jason Robert Brown's tough musical score affected the cast.

BWW Review: Good and Evil Collide in Orlando Shakes' DR. JEKYLL & MR. HYDE
by Libby Champion - October 21, 2016
Good and evil. Purity and sin. Divinity and hell. These things are complete opposites and many would argue that people can be either one or the other. But is it possible that both of these traits can live inside of us? Can each of us have a darkness inside of them yearning to be free? In Orlando Shakes' DR. JEKYLL & MR. HYDE these are the questions audience members find themselves asking.
