Don’t miss New York Gilber & Sullivan Players' critically acclaimed production of The Mikado. The Mikado features all of your favorite G&S characters: romantic Yum-Yum and Nanki-Poo, Ko-Ko, the inept and comical Lord High Executioner, as well as the fearsome Katisha, the hilariously ridiculous Pooh-Bah (Lord High Everything Else), and the politely sadistic Mikado himself. A brief new prologue set in the offices of the D’Oyly Carte Opera Company frames the classic work for today’s audiences. While this production underlines how The Mikado can be enjoyed by artists and audiences of all backgrounds, Gilbert’s lyrics and Sullivan’s melodies - which have delighted musical lovers for over one hundred thirty-five years - are still as fresh as “the flowers that bloom in the spring.”
New York Gilbert & Sullivan Players (NYGASP) continues its expanded 49th season with its critically acclaimed new production of Gilbert & Sullivan’s The Mikado.
Die-hard musical theater enthusiasts and fans of opera will love the Mikado, one of Gilbert and Sullivan's strongest scores. With quick-witted and clever lyrics that satirize society, you can easily see the influence G&S's works like The Mikado had on the works of American musical theater composers Rodgers and Hart, Stephen Sondheim, and Harnick and Bock. Some of the standout numbers from the score that you're probably already familiar with (or if not, you should be) include a?oeThree Little Maids,a?? a?oeThe Flowers That Bloom in the Spring (Tra La)a?? and a?oeTit-Willow.a??
