ONE NIGHT ONLY | U.S. SCREEN PREMIERE | GREEK WITH ENGLISH SUBTITLES | DIRECTOR Q&A
From the Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus to New York, Poreia Theatre's acclaimed production of Sophocles' Electra comes to Symphony Space for a one-night U.S. screen premiere.
The production premiered at Epidaurus in 2025 and went on to tour Greece and Cyprus. Dimitri Tarlow then reimagined it for the intimacy of Poreia Theatre's indoor stage. That production was filmed for audiences beyond Greece and will be shown in New York on October 11.
Tarlow moves the tragedy into the aftermath of a party. The palace has become a decaying European cabaret, inhabited by fallen performers, figures from the margins, and a family trapped inside the memory of murder. Music, desire, fear, and political power press against Sophocles' story until Electra's demand for justice becomes inseparable from the violence it may unleash.
At its center is the confrontation between Electra and Clytemnestra. Loukia Michalopoulou plays Electra with fury and fracture, opposite Aglaia Pappa's commanding Clytemnestra. Their struggle gives the ancient tragedy an immediate human force: a daughter who refuses silence, a mother who refuses judgment, and a household where every claim to justice carries a cost.
The cast also includes Konstantinos Zografos as Orestes, Grigoria Metheniti as Chrysothemis, Konstantinos Avarikiotis as the Pedagogue, Dimitri Tarlow as Aegisthus, Periklis Siountas as Pylades, Ioanna Lekka and Eleni Vlachou as the Chorus Women, and Tasos Mysirlis as the onstage musician. Sets and costumes are by Paris Mexis, music is by Fotis Siotas, and lighting is by Alekos Anastasiou.
Q&A with Dimitri Tarlow
Director Dimitri Tarlow will join the audience in person for a Q&A following the film. The conversation offers a rare chance to hear how this Electra traveled from Epidaurus to an indoor stage and then to the screen, and why Sophocles' questions about justice, revenge, power, and resistance remain so urgent.
